I made my solid sugar scrub experiments yesterday and today hope to play with emulsified scrubs. I have two recipes I'm trying out, but have questions about them both. Please help!
1. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.ca/20 ... aking.html
This one uses soybean oil (some of her variations have it split 50-50 with olive oil). I don't have soybean oil, but do have sweet almond and rice bran. Would either of these work well in this recipe?

2. http://www.theherbarie.com/Soothing-and ... Scrub.html
This recipe uses an ingredient I'm not familiar with: Cromollient SCE (used at 3% of the recipe). There is a note below the recipe that states: "AquaEm or polysorbate 20 may be substituted for Cromollient SCE." The item description for Cromollient describes it as providing emolliency. I don't have either of the suggested substitutes, so can I just leave it out?

Thank you, in advance, for anyone who can provide some guidance for me!

(Note: I found it interesting that there is an emulsified sugar scrub recipe on NG website that is very similar to Swifty's. http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/mas ... iscrub.pdf The NG recipe changes a few things (like using beeswax), but there are some phrases in the instruction part that are pretty much word-for-word the same. I'm assuming this is okay?)

You can sub a liquid oil for another liquid oil. You can leave the Cromollient SCE out. I would not use beeswax, as that will make it draggy on your skin. NG should not be using the recipe word for word, unless they got premission from Susan (swiftcrafty). That's a copyright infridgment.

To answer the question, Tween is just a trademark version of a liquid called polysorbate. It comes in two strengths, 20 and 80. The 20 is used with lighter oils such as FOs and the 80 is for heavier oils. They act as an emulsifier to 'stick' oil and water together. For instance if you want to make a water based room atomiser, it's going to be basically 99% water, and the oil won't mix, so you use 1% FO and 1% polysorbate and as if by magic you get 'soluble oil'.
I'm guessing that without it in the recipe you may indeed end up with droplets of oil floating in the tub. You'd have to try a sample batch.

I made the sugar scrub from the NG site off You Tube and it felt kinda slippery. I made it again and left out the beeswax as Irene suggested and it felt better. It feels alot better after it as set for a day..now I really like it.
