Okay - FIRST OF ALL - let me say we had to evacuate yesterday due to a wildfire....CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY...so I am nt exceedingly sure where some of mt stuff is at the moment (like my camera). Now...on to my problem...

I made a batch of "nearly the real deal" castile soap Friday....mostly olive oil, a little coconut oil, and of course my ever present goat milk. FOR SURE I achieved partial gel, and then promptly chickened out and stuck in the fridge, returning 2 days later to cut it after unmolding it.

AT FIRST I had what I assumed where power circles - I had mentioned and asked about them in a post, so I figured I had jinxed myself into having them AGAIN right? No big deal...but now I look at them and in a white bar of soap (pretty white at least) I have what look like orange rings in my power circles...not spots per se, like a splotchy spotty spots kinda thing, but for sure rings....I hope i can find the camera...you gotta see it, it's a trip!

So...would those be the evil DOS I hear of? Or is it a power circles thing that will cure out? If they are DOS can I rebatch it to get rid of them? I was thinking I wouldn't mind that, since I have this little tiny sample bottle of moonlight pomegranate and all...and it says it's not easy to work with in CP soaps....would rebatching and using it then be better and easier? I like how it smells "OOB" (is that right, out of bottle I believe?) so I wouldn't mind smelling it in some soap :)

Anyways - hears hoping I find the camera so I can get a pic...but just from the description what are ya'll thinking?

It could just be power circles still that are in the process of evening out.

If it is dos, it can't be fixed or rebatched, it would still have rancid oils in it. For now, just to be safe I'd keep them away from any other curing soaps. I've heard other soapers have had problems with dos spreading to other batches when kept with dos soaps.

oh! I almost forgot - they don't zap! I checked several times, several bars..nope...no zappage at all (I can only think of one person on the forum that would have been sad about that ;) )

So do clarify this one question if you will: Is a DOS ALREADY rancid, or just bound to BECOME rancid? That still has me confused a tad...and they are on their own shelf away from other soaps...I've been watching them closer than you watch a doe about to kid around here ...like a nerd....

I wish I knew where the camera had gone to...

LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!! (happy dance, happy dance, it's still here :) ) The camera has been located....look...this is what I got:

Image

See...it's like a double ring of orange and then webbing through the middle...curious eh? (Kinda cool tho too...reminds me of my mare Smokey as her coat changes with the seasons :) )

New soap can't be rancid, so it's not DOS! DOS happens when soap gets old, not when it's just been made.
I suspect it is oxidation compounds, something from the milk component. It'll probably be just fine once cured.

I would say it's either the coconut and/or the goat's milk.

hmmm...so many possibilities here...

I wonder if the goats copper boost a while back could have influenced this....I wonder if the oils had something up with them (but they hadn't done that in any other soaps...).....

Soap making...so many mysteries :)

I've had that happen with my milk soaps when it was just about to overheat... that's why all my milk soaps go straight in the fridge or freezer and I never allow them to gel. The strawberry / Gm soap I made looked identical to that. It was... "ok", but really lacked lather and bubbles upon testing. Not bad... just, didn't feel "right".

I'd let it cure and test it in the shower.

Oh...like little waves of cooked milk in there? I won't be throwin' it out, I do want to wait a bit and see what we get...I still think it is kinda nifty looking - not "normal" - but oddly entertaining...like marbled milk soap :)

I wonder if I could still maybe rebatch part of it and play with it? Maybe toss in some coffee grounds for "dirty man hands soap" for my husband?

It's not a loss, just another experiment :)

I agree, looks like about to overheat milk crinkles inside a fancy double power circle! I think it looks super neat!

I've had a few batches where the power circle was softer than the rest of the bar. Its backwards to the usual! They've all cured just fine and are now homogeneously hard. I also had one reverse power circle where the outside gelled and the middle didn't. Still haven't figured out how that one happened!
