Teach Soap

Hello everyone. I'm new to soap making. I have just started using color in my soap. I used BB Ultramarine Blue pigment in CP and it turn GREY, Please help. thank you in advance.

What is your recipe and how much of the blue are you adding per lb. of soap?

I type very slow it's going to take me a minute to get the recipe and type it in.

Shea butter 4oz
Olive oil 10oz
Coconut oil10oz
Super fat - 1 Tbsp Caster oil

There is no need to add any oil or butter as your superfat and add it at trace. Lye is still very active at trace and it will take whatever it wants. Weigh that castor oil and add it to your recipe. Besides, you want that castor oil to saponify, since it adds bubbles to CP soap.

I added your castor to your recipe. I didn't weigh it. I added it as a 0.5 oz.
Castor Oil 0.5oz 2.04%
Coconut Oil 10oz 40.82%
Olive Oil 10oz 40.82%
Shea Butter 4oz. 16.33%
Total Weight 24.5ozs.
For that size batch, you would need 6-9 ozs. of water and 3.5 ozs. of lye for a 7% superfat.

Thank you. I'm still not clear what I did to make the pretty blue turn grey. I'm going to try a again tomorrow. a 1 lb batch. I will add 1/2 tsp of the ultramarine blue. I added more before but I did not measure it. ( I know that wasn't too smart- ). Thank you for all your help.

You might find it reverts back to blue after it cures a bit. I have that with Ultramarine Purple/Pink... it goes grey, but then comes back a bit after it's cool and is curing.

If you use enough ultramarine blue, it should not morph and stay blue. For a 1 lb. batch, I would convert your oils, butters and lye into grams for better accuracy. Putting the lye into grams is important as it's easy to add too much lye, making the soap lye heavy.

Thank you soooo much. I just made a batch of soap. I did 2 other colors just in case the blue turned grey. So far it has not. I made a 2lb batch. I split it into 4 and used 1/2 tsp of ultramarine blue. I followed the tutorial on teach soap but used the oils I have on hand. I wish I knew how to put pictures on here so I could share. Thanks for every thing. This forum is nice.

Okay, I finally downloaded the photo bucket and took the pictures. I then tried to copy the picture but it stated the file was too big.
