I'm making a whipped body butter that has shea, jojoba, fragrance, Dry Flow, and a preservative.

The preservative I'm using is Liquipar Ultima, and has a recommended usage rate of .5% to 1%.

My question is this: is the percentage calculated on the total ingredients (shea, jojoba, fragrance, & Dry Flow), or just the shea & jojoba?

Thanks.

Anita

Preservative is normally based on the total weight of ingredients minus the FO. So for instance the whipped body butter I did yesterday was a total of 20 ounces of oils and butters but also includes 5 teaspoons of tapiocha starch (dry flo). I calculated my preservative based on the 20 ounces of oils and butters. HTH.

If your body butter does not contain water then you don't need a preservative. The only time you need a preservative is when you combine oils and water. if you do use a preservative look at the usage rate for the one you have chosen. The usage rates vary for each preservative. Say I use phenonip. The rate is .5%-1%. I use .5% phenonip I would add up the total weight of every ingredient and figure out what .5% of that is. Make sure to check the usage rate for every different type of preservative. If the company you bought it from doesnt have it on their website then call them.

Your total is based on the total ingredients (except the fragrance). If there is any chance that damp fingers, moisture or any water drops might get into your product, I would use a preservative.

Interesting preservative, haven't come across it before, should be very effective as it combines two systems.
