I'm looking to make a Eczema Soap for my family members who has Eczema very badly (So badly that my Aunt In Law :) when she goes to the Graveyard to visit her Parents Graves is broke out and itching from any exposed skin (Her legs due to wearing dresses and her arms from wearing short sleeves) and this breaks my heart to see her this way), in my recipe it calls for Egyptian Rose Geranium EO.

Well in doing research on the ingredents in my recipe to buy I've come up with this:

Name Geranium Rose Compound
Category Other Aromatic Extracts
Method Compounded oil
Code GerRos1

Geranium Rose Compound There has been much confusion about the term "Geranium Rose" and so I wanted to take a moment to hopefully clarify the situation. Technically, this term is inappropriate to describe the essential oil of geranium but nonetheless is used. When your talking about true essential oils, there is Geranium oil and then there is Rose oil, the two should not be confused and the terms really should not be combined together. Most typically it is used to refer to a common compound (a blended product) sold by many of the larger companies. For example, the Geranium (Rose) Egyptian compound, while it does contain some natural geranium oil, is typically blended with other rose type aromachemicals. This is how the product can be made available at such a low price and why its used by soap makers everywhere. The problem arises when companies fail to tell you that this is not a pure essential oil but a compound (a blend of natural and synthetic). In fact, most companies who sell this are selling it as an essential oil, but we refuse to conform to the trend and will not call this an essential oil, even though it is sold to us as such. I can prove its not an essential oil because the analysis is quite obvious, even to the novice essential oil chemist. This is not to say that there is no such thing as true geranium oil from Egypt, of course there is, but this product should be denoted as simply "Geranium oil, Egyptian" and should be the steam distilled oil from Pelargoneum graveolens. The matter becomes even more confusing due to people using the term "Rose Geranium" oil to refer to the oil coming from Pelargonium roseum which comes from Madagascar (and a few other places) and is chemically very similar to P. graveolens but typically has a slightly rosier scent. If your still confused then you can always let price give you some indication as to what you are dealing with. True geranium oil (non-certified organic) in bulk drum quantities typically will fluctuate from $25 - $50/lb ($55-$110/kg) direct from source, depending on quality, country of origin and currently market conditions. So when you see a company selling bulk geranium oil in the $15 - $25/lb range you know that it cannot possibly be pure geranium oil, especially when the company selling the oil is buying in less than drum quantities from larger company who may or may not have bought it direct from source.

Now my questions is after you read this should I still use this in my soap recipe (That is if I can find it) for my family members? If not what should I use in place of it?? My recipe came from Ann Marie of BB on the "Ask Ann Marie" (Not that I'm doubting her ingredients on her recipe) I'm just concerned about it being as they state above. Any thoughts on this??? Thanks and Hugs, Lee

This isn't much help to you but my little girl gets eczema and we use an oatmeal based liquid stuff from the chemist. It has no scent added.

I've found you can use the best of the best most pure product and rinse and rinse but it makes no difference if she gets sweaty or gets chlorine on her or gets suncream on her. And being a kid these things happen every day.

I think stick to simple ingredients that do no harm. Personally I'd steer clear of the fragrance AND the essential oils.

Sorry I wasn't much help after all that.

I have customers that swear by GM CP, plain castile CP, brightly colored CP scented with FO's, uncoloured EO's and all combo's!

I have come to the conclusion after many years of this that every case is, or can be different.

I personally break out with extreme stress or if I have a panic attack, and then after a few weeks it settles. This also sets of my rosacea. My dermo says that it will always occur.

So perhaps, start with a no scent, or lightly scented high olive oil soap and work up from there :)

Sorry to be a party pooper but I know of someone who is allergic to lavender and a different person who is 'sensitve' to tea tree. Hah! I think it does come down to what different ppl swear by and what some ppl can't stand.

Everyone's skin and situation can be so different. I'd tread carefully with this one!
