Hi everyone!! I began my soapmaking on Sunday and have made a different batch each morning since !!! I've been finding things to use as molds all over the house. Has anyone used Pringles cans? They have a silver color liner and a metal base. I don't know if either contains aluminum but I'm mostly concerned about inside the cylinder. I can cut off the bottom and fashion a CPS safe bottom seal with cardboard, tape and freezer paper. So let me know if anyone has used Pringles cans and what your thoughts are. I think they would make a great mold for a small circle bar to try new recipies and scents.

I've used Tazo boxes, iPod boxes, buttermilk cartons and random smallish cardboard boxes.....nothing is safe for the recycle bin anymore :D

Thanks!!!!!!!
Amanda

I would be leery to use the Pringles box due to the silver lining. If it is aluminum, lye will react with it.

I have seen people line it with baking/wax paper, but for a couple of dollars you can pick up the plastic piping that plumbers use from hardware stores and that works great!

Thanks for the quick feedback!!! I submitted the question to the Pringles website. I don't expect a response but it was worth a try. I've heard of people using PVC pipe for molds...as my husband is a plumber I have PVC around somewhere.... or should I say everywhere

Thanks again.... I'll keep collecting and soapmaking with anything for now until my wood molds are ready!

Take care,
Amanda

I'll take PVC over Pringles cans any day. :D

I used one when I first started and it was a nightmare getting the soap out and it took way longer to cure because air could not get past the first layer of hardened soap.

You can get a 3 foot long PVC pipe, 3" diameter, at Lowes for around $5. You can even ask them to cut it in half so you have 2 nice round molds!! I used a makeshift end cap, but you can purchase plumbing caps for them for around $1.

Pringle cans are some of my favorite molds. I just cut the metal end off and use the lid for the bottom. If I am afraid the lid will come off, I use hot glue around the outside of the lid. I have never had a lye reaction because the inside of the can is coated with a thin plastic kind of like plastic wrap. If I gel the soap, it slides right out when I am done. If I don't gel, I can peel the soap out like you would biscuits out of a can. My kiddos have enjoyed my need for pringles cans!

Here is a pic of my latest pringle can soap. I soaped Saturday evening, wrapped it in towel so it could gel, and then put in the refrigerator once it was finished to make sure that it did not overheat. I use goat milk in all my soaps. It slid right out on Sunday morning. I just tipped it over and it started to slide out.

Wow that's awesome! Given the mixed reviews I will have to give it a try and see what happens. I have let my batches gel so that shouldn't be a problem and like you said I can pop them in the fridge to help unmold. Thanks to all for the quick and helpful comments!

just to close the loop on the issue about Pringles cans and whether or not the silver canister lining is aluminum or not.... The folks at Pringles Customer Service responded to my email inquiry as follows:

Amanda,
Thank you for contacting us concerning the makeup of our Pringles® cans.
The interior of the Pringles can is made up of fiber board and coated with an aluminum coating.
I hope that helps! We appreciate your interest in our company and products.
Sincerely,
Katy H.

With Pringles cans, you have to clean them well or they develop a rancid film from any leftover oil. I stick with PVC which will season with repeated use and coatings of mineral oil.

Great you got an answer! Unfortunately aluminium reacts with lye. :|

You can also get the column molds from BB, with a nice liner, for a REALLY great price! I love those molds!
