Teach Soap

I made a pure olive oil soap. Just olive oil, goat milk and lye. Everyone says it MUST cure for 6 months. Why is that? After 4 months it is very hard. I confess I used it. Imagine my surprise with all the lather. I love it. What difference is 2 more moths going to make?

Castile soap gets better with age. Since you added milk, which has sugars, you are getting bubbles. You would not get that normally with just olive oil and lye. Pure castile is slimy.

I only make goats milk castile and it's amazing! It definitely gets better the longer it cures.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

We've been thinking about hot processing a batch of castile. How do milks hold up in HP, any tips for that? I know I see lots of people have made milk or cream HP, so I know it's possible. Lye solution? After cook?

Finally. Just by dumb luck I did something right. I LOVE THAT SOAP. I can hardly wait to give it to the people who asked for it. It is so hard I think I could even get it to come out of that silly silicone mold I have so much trouble with.

You should cook it on the warm setting of your crockpot. Low and slow. If you get it too hot it will scorch the milk. If you don't have a warm setting then you can put in on low for 10 minutes then shut it off for 10 minutes so it won't get too hot. It needs your attention. I never understood why someone would add it after the cook because it would just go sour and rancid. Yuck!
