A friend-of-a-friend wants to know if I can make a soap for him that has a lot of oats in it. He says he has a hard time finding soap with enough oats in it for him. I thought I remembered reading that you can make soap with oat milk....is that correct? If so, can the oat milk be a full water replacement? Any other words of advice/caution I need to think through before formulating this one?

Another thought.....can you use actual cooked oatmeal (plain, unsweetened)? If so, how does that work?

Yep, you can use oat milk as 100% of your liquid! I made one with oats in it and my friend says it is BRUTAL on his skin. :( He comes out of the shower all red and scratched up. Colloidal oatmeal is a great additive though! All the goodies from oats without the scratchiness!

Another trick to help break up the oats...toss them in a coffee grinder ans give them a few short bursts....not enough to powder them but just breaking them up. You can put ground oats in it too.

I do already make a soap with oats in it. I threw old fashioned oats into my Vitamix and gave it a few whirls. Breaks them up nicely. So now, I just want to add more oat-y goodness to it!

I make a gardener's soap jam packed with oatmeal and it's very scrubby. I definitely wouldn't want to use it anywhere but on my hands and feet.

I wizz my oats in a blender first to break them all up. Then again, I love how scratchy they are. In some spots I am like a cat being scratched in all the right places I love it so much!

Carrie, you can make "oat milk" by soaking uncooked oats in the water over-night, then draining out the oats and squeezing the water out of them. Then use your oat milk to mix your lye in. Keep in mind it may be a little stinky when you add the lye. When I add lye I put it on the stove with the vent turned on high...it helps me. Also be sure to add your lye to the oat milk SLOWLY, and keep stirring until it is all dissolved. If you dump your lye in too fast, it may form a crust on the bottom of the container that you wil have to break up to get it incorporated. It will be thicker than the usual water/lye solution but will still work. I did this several years ago and the soap was VERY nice to use. Thanks for reminding me of this. Will have to do it again. :D

I have made soap using oat milk also! And it turned out great. I have also read but never yet tried that you can use baby oats ( such as Gerber) as an additive that is not so scratchy.

My oat-y soap turned out just like I hoped it would. Contains oats 3 ways: pureed & watered down oatmeal to mix the lye into, finely ground oat "flour" as an additive, and whole old-fashioned oats as a topping.
I tried a bit today and was very pleased. Hoping it will still meet my expectations after a good cure :)
