Teach Soap

What is everybody's opinion of orange peel powder as an exfoliant? I have never had the chance to feel it first hand, and I don't want to order it if I'm not going to be able to use it. I am making a facial bar using clay (sea clay and rose clay) for color and avocado oil.

I absolutely adore St. Ive's green tea scrub, and the closest comparable exfoliant I think I've found (through research only - wish I could reach through my computer screen for smell-o-vision and touch-o-vision) is bamboo powder.

Is the orange peel powder rough or fine or somewhere in the middle?

I haven't used orange peel powder, but I really like lemon peel powder in soap. I don't find it scratchy at all.

What about grating orange zest on the fine blade of the 4-sided then freeze drying it for a couple days? Wouldn't that give an approximation? Maybe you could try that and take a tiny pinch and work it with your current lather. See how you like the feel, smell, and sensation.

I think I will try that. That's a really great idea I never would have thought of. Looks like I need to go buy some oranges from Costco

I wonder if after freezing it I could put it in my mini chopper to make it finer... Or maybe the mortar and pestle. Or would the oils probably turn it into a paste?

I'd think the finest side of a 4 sided grater would already make it finer than a coffee grinder but, hey, you never know until you try.

Peel powders come in several different grinds, would depend where you got it. The stuff I sold at Bulk Barn was a course grind and would rip your skin off! But I have seen one that is as fine as confectioners sugar too!

I got my lemon peel powder from BrambleBerry and it's really nice -very finely ground. Plus, it makes the soap a beautiful color.

I use tangerine peel, yet only in my mp soaps, and no one finds them too scratching. If I want a face bar, I let the peel dry and then grate it finely in the mixer. If I want a body bar, I grate the fresh peel in rough but tiny pebbles. I never got oil/paste problems.
