I am a member of several soap and natural skin care groups on another forum. I just saw someone give a new soaper advice to use straight chili oil for red colorant with no warning about that this oil could burn the skin. I quickly posted after warning of burns with chili powder as well as cinnamon and clove oils, and suggested annatto seeds and told her how to infuse them. The lady had told her how to infuse some flowers but hadnt mentioned annattos. I am still kind of going  :o  :o

Does it seem to anyone else but me that it's those that have just a few batches under their belt are giving out that kind of advice?

How amusing (to me) that I opened this thread after getting the email that my supervisor has my Aromatherapy exam ready and waiting for me!! I sit there and wonder if I really needed to put the last of my savings into a qualification, yet at least I know my products will be safe!!

And yes, Irena, I too notice there's a lot of *under 10 batch* soapers giving out advise like they know what they're talking about... :?

I mean I know I did the chili powder thing, like less then 1/4 tsp in over 16 OZS .. but this lady was like use straight chili oil as your red. How much chili powder would you have to Use to get a real red oil? HOLY COW!!! I even know better then that.. I know what oils will burn skin.. Im real careful to not give advice unless I KNOW its from someone whos GIVEN me sound advice (FROM HERE.. YOU GUYS) and I knew annemarie had done a video on annatto seeds. May I post the return comment the lady posted to the soaper here? I wont put her name in or the other persons name, just the comment.

DAYS????? and she would LOOK into it?! OMG whats her name and WOW.. yea NO.. even as a NEW NEW MP soaper I let mine sit a few days LOL, and CP scared the heck out of me for a LONG time but I knew to let it sit for like 6 to 8 weeks then I read more and knew i could go 4 to 6 weeks. IM scared to touch anything Under that time limit. EVEN with my chemically hardened hands. Doing hair for 22 years and not using gloves does that to you lol. I can get my hands into all kinds of stuff and not have a issue in the world but I dont mess with the lye, I am gloved up.

Here is the reply MINUS names of course:

and I hope the lady isnt here and I dont offend but I am SHOCKED if she is and gave this INFORMATION OUT.

"it was not the very best choice, as you've observed yourself to add the dye directly into soap. The application of dye mainly depends on the nature of colorant, what you're using. As (NAME BLANKED) mentioned, water soluble colorants and food colorants do not work in soap. The pigment should be dispersed in glycerin or in an oil depending on your pigment. I would suggest, if you're new to soap making, that you try applying infused oils as colorants. Chili oil for example for a red color, calendula for a beautiful yellow. Another option is applying very fine clays directly after trace into soap. Green clay for green color, rosa clay for a light pink color etc. You do not need to predisperse clays , apply them rather economically to avoid sedimentation and clumping "

Hi everybody,
this one who shocked soapwitch is me and I have much more than just a few batches under my belt. And I repeat that chili infused oil could be applied to color soap without any burns and injuries.
Just for your attention, I have a phD in Collid chemistry, a degree in Aromatherapy and more than 17 years of experience in cosmetics industry, and with industry I mean that I'm working with real companies (manufacturers of raw materials and manufacturers of finished products) and not only selling my soaps on a farmers market.

Please consider, before hanging me, that we're talking about infused oils and no essential oils, you may apply the infused oil to a max. of 10%, I would rather say 5% in a RINSE-OFF product. How much essential oils do you apply in your soaps every day?

To cause more shock:
I even recommend and apply Chili oil in massage oil and in a butter against cold feet in winter (under consideration and warning of blood pressure and possible skin injuries and damages). I have even a bath oil for winter with pepper essential oil.

So Please come and hang me if you still believe I gave a wrong and irresponsible recommendation. I do not hide myself and would be ready to apologize if anybody has a proof that I'm wrong and mistaken or misleading.

I want to apologize for my latest post and for my flash point bringing my temper and my tongue out of control.
I do not regret applying and recommending chili INFUSED OIL as an additive in soap and would be very thankful for any remark which can correct me if I was wrong.
However, I apologize for my manner of responding to the comments. It was unprofessional and unfair and I'm endless sorry for that.
I didn't mean to offend anyone and I'm sorry if I did it undeliberately.

You didn't offend me at all. Sometimes I think when we're really passionate about something, it makes our responses that much more 'firey'. I know today I got quite aggressive with some other soapers about using a particular essential oil. Not because I wanted to fight them, but because I was so passionate (given I have just finished learning all about it) and they didn't want to hear it.

Passion is a good thing. :D

Thank you Coolah,
it's a great relief to me.You're right, but I'm more than often Passionate,my middle eastern temper adds salt and pepper to each discussion.

I would appreciate, if you by the way, would ask your aromatherapy supervisor, whether there would be harm in applying chili infused oil (diluted) and pepper EO (1% in carrier oil or butter, regarding the blood pressure and avoiding in case of any skin injuries or sensibilities). I hope I'm not too old and frozen minded to learn :D
