Teach Soap

Ok... So it seems like in order to make my bath bomb cupcakes look the way I'd like them to I need to pipe the frosting when it's almost the consistency of cookie dough. My hands... oh my poor hands...

I'm seriously thinking that if this is how it has to be I may need to stop making them. I have blisters. Oh, and by the time I'm done piping 12 cupcakes I'm sweating, my hands are shaking, and I have this huge indent in my palm from the piping gun.

There MUST be a better way, right?? I tried piping at a looser consistency tonight... it was a no go. Looked like a big blob of mush. So in went more powdered sugar... and then I just bit my lip and piped with the super thick stuff until I could pipe no more.

I'm using the Wilton desert decorator, got it at Walmart. I'm wondering if a different piping tool would work better? Maybe a calking gun? I have no idea... I just know I can't keep doing it like this.

What do you use?

I would use a piping bag and a large tip! I personally prefer a D2 or a 199 for cupcakes (the edible kind). The 199 adds a lot of nice ripple detail and is open enough for a thicker soap batter to easily get through. D2 is a specialty tip that requires a larger bag and a special coupler. You can pick up the bags (I reuse them) and the 199 tip at A C Moore for probably $5 or $6 in all. I find those decorating guns to be a real pain (literally!).

Thanks Hesty, I guess I can give the bag another try. I started out that way, but struggled with it, which is why I went to the gun. *sigh* Maybe I need to rethink offering these things... except that they're so dang cute and one of my best sellers!

The key to the bag is to fill it 2/3 of the way, then twist the top 1/3 to create pressure on the batter. Take it slow though! The first time I did one of those cakes with the little frosting stars all over I sprained my hand!

Good grief! Sprained your hand???

I look at all that beautiful soap cupcakes that Platypus Dreams makes and it makes my hand up to my shoulder hurt just thinking about all that piping!

Was almost as bad as the injury I got to my hand from when my sister gave birth to my niece! She almost broke my poor hand LOL
