I love Pinterest. I am really, really addicted to it. The one thing that drives me nuts though is from time to time I come across a pin that is for something usually along the lines of homemade lotion. The ones that drive me nuts are the people that say things like GSE and Vitamin E are safe preservatives. I could scream when I see this. I literally just clicked on a pin a few minutes ago and it took me to some woman's blog who was sharing a lotion recipe with GSE in it. Someone had commented on there that GSE and Vitamin E are preservatives but are antioxidants. The owner of the blog commented back and she said that her understanding was that if it is an antioxidant that it is a natural preservative. I wanted to reach through my computer screen and shake her. LOL She was talking about how she gives her lotions out to friends and family. OMG! It just drives me nuts the stupidity some people have! Sorry, lol, I had to vent.

I sympathize with you. I no longer look. It's not worth my anger nor my time. I use to comment, but those comments were never approved.

Coolah, I just read your post. I love it! I try not to look at the ones that have that but it just got me to me when I read this lady was talking about it being great for little kids too. I snapped. I did post a nice long comment on her page that did show up but I'm sure the blogger can block me from posting in the future. Haha, there is this market once am into in my town in spring and summer called the French hen's market and there was this woman selling her products (I plan I signing up next spring) and I snapped on her in front of some other people at her booth which made them walk away. (Evil grin  ) She was selling lotions with ROE as a "natural preservative" in them. Then I flipped out when I saw she had lip balm with Lime EO (YIKES) and she had a whipped Shea butter that had lime, lemon, and blood orange eo's in it with no warning about wearing in the sun. I told her that she gave other home crafters like me a bad name. Then I went home and got online to look at her website and she had all these medical claims about her soaps and what not. I reported her to the FDA. I checked her website against a couple months later and some medical claims were taken down but not all. I have a feeling the FDA contacted her but she only half listened. She not even from my area. She's like an hour away. Needless to say I didn't go back to the handcrafted farmer's market again this summer for fear she might be there and I snap again. Needless to say I have not seen her at any other craft/vendor show again in my area since then. Like I said, stupid people endangering the lives of others just makes me sick to my stomach.

Citrus Essential Oils have components in them that cause them to be photosensitive, so if you use a leave on product that contains them and go out in the sun then it can cause severe sunburn and skin discoloration which can even become permanent. There are some places that sell bergamot eo free of that component though I have never tried it. There are also places I have read that say that Grapefruit eo and Sweet Orange eo (orange valencia) have really low amounts so there is no cause of concern HOWEVER I would still err on the side of caution and not use them in my leave on products. I have never used grapefruit eo but I have used sweet orange eo in my whipped butters and lip balm for my PERSONAL use but never to be sold.

Wow, that is good to know.
Putting that in my notebook so I don't forget it.

Also, citrus eo's are generally safe to use in wash off products such as soaps and body scrubs but the scent does not really hold up well for most citrus eo's in cp. There are folded versions where the scent is more concentrated ad the scent does hold up well in cp. Have fun! It's a lot of research and reading and trial and error but it's fun and so much better for you! :)

I love citrus in soap! Try adding Litsea Cubeba eo to your scent blend as it helps anchor citrus.
