Teach Soap

Hi,

I just made a batch of soap and used Merlot Mica Sparkle for color. The problem is that it reverted to a clumpy state and had little 'unliquified' specks throughout. Is there something I need to do or is this a part of using micas? And what happens when the soap is ready to use, do you get specks of mica coming out in the shower?

Dilute the mica in a little bit of glycerin first, or if you are using it for the whole batch, mix it into your oils with a stick blender. If you add mica at heavy trace, it tends to clump.

Hi,

Does that mean a new batch of mica must be created every time you make a new batch of soap? This mica had been sitting 'dormant' in olive oil for a couple of days, kind of like being 'ready to go'.

This doesn't seem to be the case with green oxide. Are oxides different?

Use an aerolatte frother to mix the mica with the oil before you use it. Mica can settle to the bottom of the oil over time. I would make it fresh anytime you need it. Oxides are different and will stay suspended in oil.

I prefer to mix my micas and oxides with small amounts of glycerin. I "mill" the mixture against the side of the container with the back of a spoon to dissipate any clumps!
