Teach Soap

I'm working on a new recipe and will be superfatting around 7%. I normally leave a little butter to add after the cook but not a ton to where it is my entire superfat amount. I know you can superfat your batch at 0% and add all your superfat after the cook. My concern is if your batch is lye heavy after the cook. Would the lye still combine with the free oils you put in for superfatting? Isn't the saponification process done once its cooked? I measure extremely carefully but things happen and I want to know if it would still be safe just in case. With 0% there is no cushion but that seems to be the norm when doing hot process.

I have never done Hot process but from my understanding it is just like CP only you cook it, which means you superfat it up front. The only "HotProcess" soap I have seen with a 0% SF is liquid soap.

The difference between the two as far as superfatting is with HP you know what oils are not saponified by adding them after the cook.

I would add your superfat right up front. Why take the chance that the butter or oil did not completely incorporate leaving parts of the soap possible lye heavy. I don't have the link right now (Robert Dunn?), but I did read that adding any oils or butter after the cook doesn't guarantee that that particular ingredient will end up as your superfat. The molecules can still exchange places.

Thanks Irena! I'm just going to do as I have always done. It just seems I see it often done with 0% and thought I would try it. I always thought whatever you put in after the cook wasn't touched by the lye. A nice benefit of HP. Oh well!
