This morning I got up thinking I would try my hand at a lard bar. Unfortunately I discovered my daughter had used my olive oil instead of the bottle in the cabinet. MY question is this, can I substitute 2 oz of soybean oil and 2 oz of shortening in place of the OO? Here is the full recipe, I still haven't decided on a FO or EO of it yet. Any suggestions are welcome. I am thinking about trying to swirl this, haven't even thought of colors yet as I was rather flummoxed by the OO thing.

Lard 32 oz
coconut oil 10 oz
OO 8 oz
lye 7.268 oz ( do I round up or down on this?)
liquid 16.50 oz (up or down again)
total yeild 73.77

I am halving this recipe just to be on the safe side so the lye is now calc at 3.64 and liquid is 8.25

please help so I don't end up tossing this. OH one other thing, I am waiting on my BB order to get here with my stick blender so this is being mixed with a stand mixer, and by hand :) Yes I am THAT addicted to doing this, I am willing to stand and stir for hours if need be.
Thanks so much in advance!

Soybean or a shortening is a soft oil. It does not compare with olive which becomes hard after cure. They also have different SAP values. For small batches, round up your oils and round down your lye. Did you run the halved recipe through a lye calculator?

Thank you so much for a fast answer!
Yes I ran it through the Lye calc on BB. I know if you add salt to the batch it will harden up the bar more. Do you think that would work? I am just pouring into a simple home made 1 lb mold. I am also thinking I am going to forget about colorant for the moment. I can also just drop one or the other of the oils I listed and recalculate it. I am ready to strangle my beautiful daughter lol. She knows better then to use my OO.

I think with the soybean and the shortening, that will come out a soft bar, even with salt added. For a 1 lb. batch, I would recalculate into grams for better accuracy.

I am also waiting on my digital scale to get here in another supply shipment. I am using a spring scale right now. Just checked it and Yay! it does have Grams on it. I will recalculate this again. Maybe I should just go to the store and get more OO, then take it out of the kiddos allowance  I really want to be able to get this stuff down so I can in case of another situation like this comes up I can still do up a batch. If this was in your hands to decide, which oil would you prefer, if the OO was not an option? Please excuse the brain picking, but I am like a sponge and want to get as much information from seasoned soapers as I can.

I would wait or go get some olive oil. It's better as it adds hardness to the batch.

I just walked back in from the store, HUGE can of OO and several more jars of Coconut oil. I can't walk into a store when I am going to buy supplies and NOT get something extra. I had to get gloves and ended up picking up 2 drawer dividers at the dollar store to give them a try as molds. I saw a thread here yesterday about using those. So wish me luck. I am going to give this a try ( really WISH my BB box would get here) Have you ever done a batch with a stand mixer? If so would you suggest for or against using it. Tracking says estimated delivery date of Oct 8th, I don't know if I can wait that long :) and if I do I might drive everyone insane here in the house with my pacing between the door and the kitchen.

A stand mixer will mix/whip air bubbles into your soap. If you don't mind that, go for it.

Thank you so much for all your help. I think this round I will break out the good old spoon and just stir stir stir. I decided on the FO's and colorant. Used BB's fragrance calc (way awesome little helper application) IF this comes out as pretty as I am hoping I will post pictures :)
