Teach Soap

Earlier I watched a Youtube video about making your own molds using silicone sealant and corn starch. Now I can't find the video. Anyone heard of this? Hubby bought me the supplies to do it and I tried, but with not much success.

I saw one similar on the Soaping101 YouTube channel. She made little molds to make small soaps for inserts. Let me see if I can find it...

ETA: Go military wives! I live in a small city that is a bedroom community for the nearby base (Joint Base McChord-Lewis.) The Boyfriend is an Army brat - so raised by a military wife. She did a heck of a job!

ETA: per SoapBuddy's comment - this video presented them as useful for small, insert type small soaps, not to replace a "real" silicone mold. IIRC...she did note they are not long lasting. But the materials used are pretty cheap - real silicone is pretty pricey.

Don't do it! Over time that type of silicone will deteriorate, get sticky, really soft and collapse unto itself so you won't be able to use it.

I know it stunk really really bad (very strong vinegar smell so bad I had to have hubby open window). I was hoping to make a few molds of somethings and thought this would be the cheap way out.

You'd be better off "repurposing" silicone bakeware scrounged from thrift stores. I looked into getting sheets of silicone to make liners for wooden molds...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Clearly, manufacturers that MAKE silicone objects get a heck of a price break due to volume. I did not bother to crunch the numbers if I bought reduced price silicone bakeware new to cut up - but might be worth a look.

BUT...if you scrounge up enough used materials, you can buy the silicone glue to glue your pieces together. Have not tried it, but "silicone" is now on my list of "things I am always scouting about in thrift stores for".
