Teach Soap

I know there are a lot of rules with FDA regulations on not making medical claims, no moisturizing, no curing of cancer or acne, no giving you super human strength, etc, etc...


So I figured I'd poll the audience - what are good, descriptive words you use for your soaps that make them appealing and aren't against the rules? I see "skin-loving oils" a lot, lots of bubbles and creamy lather.... what about "leaving your skin feeling very soft and silky"? Is that safe?

What other fun words are good to use? This goes for MP too.

I have seen: "Cures dirt". It is one of my favorite. Someone also posted once that they found one that said: "cures stupidy" but it is not one that I would choose to use... there is a fine line there.

LoL I like "cures dirt" ! I'm sooo terrible at writing entertaining descriptions.

I'm still a loooong way from selling CP but I've had a small table of my MP soaps at shows with my other crafts for a while now -- I made a big sign that said "FREE SMELLS!" and it always gets people to laugh and come in.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

OMG! Porta Potty huh? You need to be charging them for your services as an air freshener! Don't be giving away free smell good like that (unless it's free smells to lure in customers - love that too!)

And cures dirt...I laughed so hard!That's a good one too!

Moisturizing isn't a medical claim, it's a cosmetic claim. But I'm of the belief that good handmade soap isn't moisturizing in the sense that it adds moisture, it just strips less moisture from your skin then most store bought soaps. But I know there are other soapers out there who don't feel that way.

As for what can you say about your soaps without having to label it according to cosmetic guidelines, "It cleans."

If you don't mind labeling it according to cosmetic guidelines (I do it anyways, even though all I say is that it cleans & it smells nice), the FDA has an example of a soap that is also a cosmetic:
Examples of cosmetic uses include making the user more attractive, by acting as a deodorant, imparting fragrance to the user, or moisturizing the skin.

Genny, I guess I'm just looking for ideas for descriptions, like when selling online you usually write a blurb about how fantastic your product is, making it attractive to the buyer and why they should purchase from you, etc. but without using medical/cosmetic claims. Just words like creamy, lathery, skin-loving, luxurious, and of course leaves you clean and smelling pretty! I should get a thesaurus - I'm drawing a blank after that.

Ipstenit, is that allowed? I wasn't sure if that was slightly skirting around the issue but still on the edge of trouble. Not talking printed ON the label - but just in product descriptions - like on Etsy (who cracked down on the medical claims recently)
Like saying "My soap contains such-and-such oils that have been known to have such-and-such properties?" vs. saying "my soap contains such-and-such properties" (the latter being bad)
