I think that is perfectly AWESOME! :D We don't have any children, but all of our friends with kids come by from time to time of course, and the little ones LOVE helping with "farm chores"!

I think it is wonderful you are starting her out at a young age like that, teaching some useful and valuable things like beekeeping and such :) Too many kids seem to miss out on it now ya know?

Her bravery so young ALMOST has me convinced I need some bees of my own! (Except I am still not sure if I myself am that brave....)

She's pretty fearless when it comes to bees. We helped brush bees off frames at the local bee club, and she wielded the brush, without gloves! I do insist she veil up to keep them out of her face, but other than that...

And yeah, I think it's important that kids know where food comes from. My grandmother pretty much fed her family on the garden she grew; plenty in my generation hardly seem to know where food comes from. I want her to know where her food comes from, how it grows, and the effort it takes to grow it!

Love that picture :)

My 10 yr old daughter and I last year read a whole bunch of books and articles on beekeeping in hopes that we could have our own hives. But unfortunately last spring she got stung by a bee at school and went into anaphylactic shock :( She was so sad about that.

Awww! That's awful. I hope you saw an allergist! I know that wasp and bee venom are different, but she might need to look out for both.

This is so wonderful to see! I love seeing young children being taught worthwhile, productive activities and skills that are actually useful in life, rather than working towards mastering games on Xbox (or whatever gaming system you like). What a gift you have given her----the ability and opportunity to contribute to your family (and your community) and to gain confidence that she can do something that really counts!

Good for you, Mellifera! I think it's wonderful that she is learning beekeeping. I hope it's something that she will continue to love as she gets older. I don't understand people who walk around saying they're "bored" all the time. I'm never bored. I always have something I can do. Even when I'm watching TV I'm knitting or crocheting something.

That's so awesome! As a botanist bees are one of my favorite creatures, they help bring us such yummy and healthy foods. But alas I am quite allergic to them (I suggest not stepping on a hive and getting hundreds of stings, it kills your ability take a sting and survive). I shall admire them from afar! Pollinate away little bees, and supply me with yummy yummy honey! Yay bees!

Mellifera, I am right there with you in loving that photo! Just getting kids outside is a challange for some now a days. I am sure that this will be something both of you can enjoy together. Thanks for sharing.

This is wonderful. I've always wanted to try my hand at keeping bees but my boyfriend is terrified of them, and would want nothing to do with probably a 40 foot radius of wherever I kept them so that's out of the question. Growing up my father was a lot like me, always working on hands on productive hobbies like darkroom photography, building furniture, fishing, hunting, and best of all, making maple syrup. My brother and I grew up sugaring and my little sister has been helping out since about as early as she was able too, and now that she's 12 she can do quite a bit to help out around the sugar shack.

Such an Adorable picture!!

My girls help cook, garden, clean, and I'm starting to let them help me with certain soaping tasks. They love it! It's when the TV get's left on all day that they end up bored. :)

She's adorable! Kids get self esteem from helping out too.
