Teach Soap

I've made one batch of CP soap that my family raved about and since I'm nearly out of bars of soap I figure it's time to not only make a new batch, but try to perfect the recipe I originally made.

I know there's a lot of books out there with tons of info on CP soap making (I started reading The Everything Soap Making Book) a few months back, but I'm curious as to which books/online resources will explain what butters and/or oils can be substituted for other butters and/or oils.

For instance: If a recipe calls for palm oil, but I don't have it I want to know what can be used in place of palm oil and if the usage rate would be the same. I know that I need to run everything through a lye calc, but if the recipe calls for 7oz of palm oil would I be able to use 7oz of the substitute without interfering with the hardnes/lather/etc?

Also, I know that if I were to do CPOP that the end result will be a softer bar since it doesn't need to cure as long as CP, but will the other qualities of the soap be the same?

Oils and butters have different properties and different SAP values. Subbing one oil or butter for another will not always give you the same results. Hardness or lather might be different. I would read up on the properties of the original oil and the one that you want to sub and see if they are similar.

I have done CPOP and the bars aren't softer with the CPOP method. You still need a full cure of 4 to 6 weeks; whether CP or CPOP.

I am going to say that I changed palm for lard and loved it. I did try tallow, but that was not to my liking. The best suggestion is to try different things and see what you like. I still keep making changes because this is just a hobby for me and I have come to realize I love to change things up alot. (Thank God I am not the boss at work!). I have a link to another site that talks about formulating recipes... once I get on my desk computer I will post it for you.
