whenI started out making soap I looked around my kitchen and came up with most of the stuff I needed to get started, except a stick blender and thermomiter ( thoseI had to buy). I got my first and second one at yard sales for a dollar and am still useing it and have the second one for back up. Don't waste your time or money on wooden spoons. Unless you want wood in your soap ( the lye disolves it. I got all my ingrediance except FOs at the grocery store and did at least 3 small test batches before I was comfortable even giving the soap away as gifts. Then when people asked to buy it I knew this was on my way. good luck

This is just a hobby and not a means of support for me so take what I tell you with a grain of salt.

I started like Linda. I looked around the kitchen and found what I could use, then went shopping. With your basic kitchen utensils (except for aluminum and wood), just about everything is usable. Keep your equipment separate and don't mix soap equipment with food equipment. Lard, coconut, palm, olive oil, and crisco are inexpensive and easy to find. Make these your base oils and only use expensive butters & oils to fill orders.....or for label appeal. Start mixing some of your FO's to come up with different combinations instead of buying new ones all the time. Keep things simple. Selling at the farmers market is usually free. Craft shows charge money for setup but are usually profitable. Stick to making soap for a while before venturing into lotions, balms etc. Give away a bunch as gifts to get feedback before selling to the GP. I make enough to repurchase supplies then usually donate what's left to a good cause.

Nope...not hard at all. I've used lots of different kinds of vessels, and none acted like they were going to melt.
