Teach Soap

I wonder if she did weight or volume? Let's figure it out both ways. This is a great opportunity for all of us to learn how to convert volume to weight with oils. Ready? Here we go!

1. Look up specific gravity of the oils (Olive Oil and Lard)
Olive Oil = .91
Lard = .96
2. Do the math
4 lbs by volume olive oil = 64 * .91 = 58.24 weight of Olive Oil
1 lb by volume lard = 16 * .96 = 15.36 weight of Lard

So, if she was using volume, she'd actually only have 58.24 oz. Olive Oil and 15.36 oz. Lard. Working this out by volume, the amount of lye required is 9.42 oz. (267 grams)
(5% superfat) and the liquids are recommended at 24 ounces.

If she did weight, that changes to 10.24 oz. lye (290 grams) (5% superfat) and the liquids recommended are 26.4.

No matter how it's done, weight versus volume, her soap is lye heavy. There cannot possibly that much fat in the goatmilk to make up for that sort of deficit.

So sad! This lye heavy soap isn't salvageable.

I think that video should be flagged on YouTube. It's such a waste of oil and product and will 100% dry out someone's skin/possibly burn them.

If you'd like to recommend any books to her, my favorite book on soapmaking is The Soapmaker's Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch. It's so sad your friend fell prey to someone dispensing bad advice over the internet. With how lye heavy the soap is, I don't even know if it's suitable for laundry soap. =(

I finally A) watched the same video she watched and B) talked to her last night...it DID have another 2+ lbs of one more oil....she cut it already and in pictures it looks GREAT! I am not driving 4 hours round trip to look at soap, no matter HOW MUCH I love someone...not doing it...

We aren't out to sell anything, just baby goats each spring But our main goal is to produce stuff for our families from our own farms...with what we have available...she is more of a "find a tried and true recipe and follow it" kinda person...I like to experiment and dig deeper into things...find out WHY and HOW and such....

Am I concerned still? Yes...I don't think things are as understood as they could be...am Iworried...no...not like I was the first night! It sure does look pretty in pictures though...

Maybe you could have her do the zap test? I sure wouldn't want to use that soap no matter how pretty it looks! 2# is a lot of oil to leave out.

LOL...see I think the problem with baby goats is that they drink ALL MY MILK and once they grow up and PRODUCE ME MILK THEN I am smitten!

Babies are fun no doubt...but the MILK is what I LOVE the most!
