I'm thinking about making some MP soap with real oatmeal for some exfoliation, but I need some help. Can I use regular old 100% Natural Old Fashioned Oats that I have in my pantry? If so what is the recommended usage rate? I'm assuming how much I grind up the oatmeal is personal preference and is also based on how scrubby I want the soap to be. If I just use the oatmeal and the OMH FO I purchased from NG would it turn a white base to a nice earthy/natural color or is it worth adding color?

It seems like a majority of people make some kind of OMH/oatmeal soap; although I want to make unique soaps sometimes it isn't worth reinventing the wheel which is why I've decided to give it a go!

P.S. The above statement isn't intended as an insult so I hope it doesn't come off that way!! I've realized that not everyone (as far as soap users not soap makers) is into the fun and funky, but rather the more traditional. Even though I'm not selling yet, I figure it is a good thing to keep in mind.

As long as you don't use the microwaveable kind you're good! I don't even measure the oatmeal anymore. I just kind of eyeball it. The oatmeal doesn't color the base.

You can use regular oatmeal. The amount of oatmeal you add is also personal preference, but I would start with a small amount and just keep adding until it's the way you like.

Thank you! I wasn't sure if there was a suggested usage rate like there is for adding oils and clay. I'm pretty excited to try it out!!

I wouldn't add too much oatmeal though as you might lose bubbles. Also, because of the high moisture content present in MP base, you might want to use these as soon as possible to avoid spoilage. Debbie Chialtas of SoapyLove just did a new video on making exfoliating MP soaps for Kin Community: :)

I'm not sure if you know this or not..so I'll share, you want to watch the temp of your soap when you pour, if you're too hot the oatmeal will sink and/or rise, you want the soap to be still pourable but thick so that you suspend the oatmeal throughout..unless you want it layered on the top and/or bottom. I learned this the hard way, so I thought I'd share :)

I'll definitely start off small and add more if need be. So the oatmeal can go bad in the soap? Is there a way to know what will spoil and what won't? I read on another post that cocoa powder won't spoil...do we just figure these things out based on trial and error? I just don't want to lose/ruin batches of soap.

Thank you soooo much for your response!! When I first made MP soap I bought the base from Michaels and used kale in the batch. Not only did it all sink to the bottom of the mold, but it smelled horrible!! My bf and I actually purchased a bunch of stuff to include in either MP/CP, but now I'm not even sure if they can be used in soap. I'll have to find what we purchased and respond back with the names. It was really sweet of my bf though, he took me to some herbal/witchcraft-like store because he knew they would have different additives that he thought could be useful in soap.

You're welcome. :) Another thing to consider if you're adding stuff to your MP is whether it's skin-safe or not, and to what percentages. If you can't find any info googling it - just ask here on the forum and someone might have the answer. We have great mods here on the forum like Soapbuddy and list owner Soap Queen who've got tons of experience and are so helpful. 8) I've learned tons from them and SoapyLove.
