Teach Soap

Starting up the ol' soap making for the holiday season. I use my usual recipe:

Almond oil 2.5%
Avocado oil 7.5%
Castor 2.5%
Cocoa butter 6.3%
Coconut oil 20.8%
olive oil 40.2%
Palm oil 11%
Shea butter 9%

SF 7%
Poured in to a wood loaf mold with a lid that is slightly cracked open so it always gels
Soaped at about 110 degrees

The last two batch have felt oily when unmolded. Oily on the top. It seems to go away but I don't like it. I am thinking of lowering my SF to 5%

Is it hot or humid where you are? Sometimes that can affect how the soap feels. As long as the oils is soaking in and there's no zap, I wouldn't be too concerned. But, that's just me.

Is it hot.......are you kidding me. I am in the San Joaquin Valley of CA. It was 108 degrees yesterday!!! I can only afford to cool my house to 85 degrees.

Ok. I won't worry

Ha ha. Sissy. Rest assured if you came to visit me I would bump the air conditioning down to 78 Degrees.

Excuse me while I put on some clothes to mix lye. No mixing lye naked!

The heat makes my soaps feel oily too, but it soon re-absorbs into the soap. It does it at 5% SF and at 8% SF. My house is 70, this is an oven for me. I'd die there! Literally!!

It's 29.7C in my house at the moment, which is 85.5 F. Needless to say the lab is even higher, and even the hydrogenated coconut oil is liquid.
That's a nice recipe. I suspect your SF is actually higher than you think, it does depend on the actual SAP values which vary from batch to batch of raw materials.

My last 2 batches (I did pumpkin spice pie and coffee) had oil rise to the top. The coffee actually cracked......yikes! I keep my house around 75. But we did have rain this weekend, maybe that had something to do with it.

My last batch of Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey started to look like lava on the surface. I could see it mound up in places so I put Blue Ice packs over the top of the soap because the mold was too big for the refrigerator. A different batch started warming up today so I "iced" it too.
