Teach Soap

I just realized I bought cocoa butter and have never used it yet in CP soap (duh). I've read somewhere that you have to temper the cocoa butter first instead of just melting it along with the other oils. Can anyone tell me how to temper cocoa butter?

With cocoa butter, I just melt it until it's melted and then add it to the rest of my oils.

Is there a reason you can't just melt your oils and then put in the cocoa butter and let it melt with the heat of the other oils?

You would have to bring your other oils to a fairly high temp as the cocoa butter is a hard butter and usually not my quickest butter to melt. I have never bothered to temper it.

Sometimes A Mistake is so much fun, You just have to do it again!

I add all my ingredients for soaps together and gently heat til it's all melted. You don't need to temper cocoa butter for soap.

Oh yes, something like 150% daily intake of saturated fats per tablespoon. Used to sell it by the tonne, that and coconut oil (~70% daily saturated fats / tablespoon) to "health nuts" who heard or read that both would lower cholesterol. We had all sorts of medical and health professionals begging us to either stop selling it, or to educate the customers. But at almost $20 for 16oz and one of our fastest and best sellers, there was no way we were going to tell folks not to buy it. Though when asked I would tell them that the fats would by no means lower cholesterol.

I love the smell of cocoa butter as well. So I decided to make cocoa butter based soap. I didn't add any scent. The recipe included castor and coconut though. But it doesn't smell like butter. I was so upset. Still upset : (
