Teach Soap

You have to understand that I'm terrifically excited about this, because it is the first wooden object I have ever successfully created. Ever. Other than a toothpick, which I whittled as a small child sitting on the porch with my grandfather one summer. It was supposed to be a wooden dolly, but it just kept getting smaller; I couldn't make the blade go in anything but a straight line.

Well, straight lines were what this project was all about. I didn't actually get that many, but at least the individual wood pieces started out straight.

In case it's confusing: D'vorah is not my actual name. It's a historical persona I've taken on for purposes of my living history hobby. More people know her than know me, though, so that's why I'm D'vorah on that website.

Hey it looks about 5000% better than my efforts. Hinges even! I have to bang mine on the floor. The mould, that is, not my head...

You're funny. I'd have made mine with just plain sides instead of hinges, but I don't trust my ability to get soap out reliably without some assistance from the box. Also, the soap mold I've been using was hinged, and until recently I actually thought all soap molds had to be hinged. I'd bought the hinges ages ago, intending to learn to do this, and this week I finally made the time.

You know what? I think I'm going to make another spate of time, too, because I want to get some more molds made. I'm thinking something like 12" x 14" external dimensions, because I know that soap from that size of a box will cure/shrink down to where it will fit in a USPS flat rate Medium sized box very nicely. Now that I've shown I can make something and will USE the tools if I've got them, I think Ipstenu (my beloved) will approve the purchase of more wood. I'm pretty excited about this.

Very nice looking mold! I love how you calculated the cost and then applied that to future molds. What a neat, useful project and how wonderful to look at that everytime you make soap and know that YOU made it!!

I love it! I took a wood working class once.... not an easy task unless you are born with that talent. I have been dreaming of doing this but need to find the time. Question: did you sand bevel the edges so they were slightly rounded?

Looks great! Now that you own the sander, the next one should be about $30 cheaper.

Looks fantastic! I'm going to get my FIL to make a couple for me. I'm terrified of saws; saw a friend cut his thumb off in school shop class, haven't touched an electric saw since.
