Teach Soap

I was at a bee keeper's symposium today and sat in on a session where a lady made cream and lip balms. SOOOOO many thing I could comment on regarding her info, but I did have one specific question. She used borax in her cream, stating it is an emulsifier. Is this accurate? Also, she commented that the borax you use in soap is not the same as borax you buy in the laundry section of a grocery store. Again, is this accurate? Why would anyone even want to use borax in a cream or lotion? (I am definitely not wanting to make her recipe....just trying to educate myself!).

Borax is borax. Borax and beeswax will make an emulsion, but it's not stable. Over time, it will break down and separate.

Lotion bars don't need a preservative, and putting them in the freezer prevented the oils going rancid. As for the rest, the borax emulsion has been going around the beekeeping community for a long time. I made a sample once, but didn't like the texture.

OMG I feel for you. What a difficult situation. So easy for it to turn into a lose-lose. I'm so sorry. Try to find some way of stepping out of the triangle of influence. It's not possible to have much influence on a situation that you're part of. That's what Irena suggested, unless you can think of an alternative.

I can't imagine making a lotion or cream without a preservative. Of course, I don't use them a bunch so they tend to last awhile and I want them to be as safe as they can when I do decide to use them. I don't put preservative in my lotion bars because they don't have any water in them. They get used pretty quickly between myself and my daughter. I put them in roll up (deodorant style) tubes. It's great. I would find a way to report that lady if possible. I'm sorry you had to deal with that uncomfortable situation.
