I am excited to try infusing calendula petals in oil! Have been growing them all summer and drying them....and now wondering - I haven't read much about other flowers being infused. What other flowers can be infused? Do they work just for coloring so or scenting or any healthy skin properties? For healthy properties is it better to use the infused oil in a lotion bar since soap us just rinsed off? Can you use dried red roses to give a color or will that color just be brown? Does any scent last from the flower or can you only get scent from eo? I have been learning of the wonders of dandelions ( as a food), do they work in an oil infusion like calendula?
It's wonderful to be able to ask all these questions and feel confident to get responses!! I don't know anyone else I could ask!!
Blessings!
Sherri

Most herbal material except for calendula will oxidize and turn brown. Since soap is a wash off product, you won't get much from the infused herbs in soap. I would make a nice lotion bar with it. Rose petals will definitely turn brown. So will lavender buds. Dandelions work better in food.

St. John's Wort yields a red infused oil even using the flowering tops and Ariel leaves, I don't know if that red color preserves in CP soap. I agree that soap is a wash off product but you can use infused St. John's Wort oil for sunburns and other irritations of the skin. Ironic since the water solubles in the plant are phototoxic. Arnica is another lovely flower for making herbal oil infusions, good for cuts and bruises, but you run into the wash off aspect there as well.

How do you list an infused oil on your label? For example: If I infuse 20 oz of olive oil with 4 oz of comfrey, how does that get listed? Thanks.

I see on labels ppl say calendula infused olive oil.

My question is are there any "special" oils that can extract more from the plant then others?
Im thinking to infuse lavander and cornflower.

wow, so many questions,
generally,I agree with all that others have already written. Infused oils not only contribute to color, they work as well, probably less in a rinse-off product than in a leave-on lotion, cream or oil.
There is a wonderful soothing After-sun oil tutorials on soap queen and at least one for making lip balm with infused oil, Anne-Marie reveals some interesting and useful tips and tricks.
Generally, you can make cold infusion, hot infusion or a combination of the both.
The best/most useful oil infusions are, calendula, st.John's worth, Arnica, Yarrow, nettle. I have recently prepared a chili infusion, it's not ripe yet, I'll inform you about it later. Besides the res color, chili is a warming herb/spice and should be applied, for example in massage oils for soar muscles or for rheumatoid pains.
For color contribution is CP-soap I rather apply tea (infusion in water) than in oil, I have some fantastic samples in which even the herb contributes to the smell, it's applicable specially to spices such as Cinnamon, Cardamom, Peppermint or chamomile
The choice of carrier oil depends on the price and stability of the oil. Jojoba is of course the best choice (because of thermal stability and shelf-life), it's up to you if you choose it because of the price. A wonderful choice with low price is Soy oil, other oils usually used are olive oil and sunflower oil. You should apply an oil with low inherent color and odor, you can not, for example apply raw avocado oil or tamanu oil because of their intensive color and odor.

I hope it could be helpful a little, the rest is a matter of experience, try in low volumes for the first couple of experiences. No panic, just try it :D

I have three oil infusions currently on my windowsill. Lavender buds, Earl Grey Tea (totally an experiment!), and dried Lemongrass. I read a VERY interesting blog article a while back about oil infusions and different uses for them. http://www.rootsimple.com/2011/07/how-t ... usion.html

Looks lovely! I'm going to try that to use in a salve. I think it might help my fingers on cold mornings! :D
