I know some of you have shops on Etsy, and I was wondering if you might be willing to share some tips on selling. I'm getting very little traffic and other than paying for it (which I can afford right now) I'm not sure how to bump it up. I know selling is a slow process, but I'm not moving ANYTHING and would really like to change that.

I don't sell on Etsy, but I do buy from shops on Etsy.

Did you just open your Etsy shop a couple weeks ago? I've heard of many Etsy sellers not getting sales for months, even with regular traffic to their shop.

I noticed your profile is really short and doesn't say much about you or your products. Personally, I'd add more info to it. I like to shop from crafters that tell me about themselves and their products, it makes me feel like I know them and I can trust them.

Also, I don't see any ingredients listed on your soaps or bath and body products. As a shopper who has allergies and shops for people with allergies and skin conditions, I need to know what's in something. If ingredients aren't listed on every body product, I shop somewhere else.

Also, it matters where you're advertising your shop and who's looking at the ads. If it's not people in your customer demographic, then it doesn't matter how many times you advertise there, they won't buy.

I also just wanted to add, in no way was I putting down your shop or how you're advertising. I'm just making some observations and stating my opinion :)

Don't sell soap, but I just started selling my vintage books and some of my bird toys on Etsy, because Ebay fees are getting to expensive. Have you used the free app they have Etsy Shoptimizer? I didn't have any sales at all until I used it and right after I sold two things.

I also agree with Genny, I won't buy if there aren't detailed descriptions. I feel if the seller can't give a detailed description they have something to hide. (not that I'm saying you are)

Brighter pics, with more then 1 pic of each item.

Thanks :) Genny, that really helps! I guess I don't really know how to self promote very well without sounding full of myself, I mean, obviously *I* think I'm great and my stuff is awesome, but I don't know how to get other people to feel that way. The shop is new, less than a month. I'm having a bit of traffic, but I think I had unrealistic expectations about it. I never thought to add the ingredients..I'll have to do that! Don't worry about offending me, if I was worried about that, I wouldn't have asked!

Michelle, where do I find the shoptimizer? I'm trying to figure it all out, but with two kids here, one constantly talking to me and the other one teething I sometimes find it hard to focus and I know I miss things. As for pics, I'd like to post more I just don't know how to make a candle more exciting from different angles..same with soap. I guess I just feel like all the pics I take are pretty much the same?

I'll work on it and see what I can do to improve it :) Thanks for the input ladies, and if anyone else would like to chime in I'd be happy to hear what you have to say www.etsy.com/shop/sweetdestinycandles

Thank you SO much Michelle! I just need to work on taking some more pictures and then I'll pretty much be A's across the board now that I've fixed it up some! Hopefully this leads to some sales. :D

I've only had my shop for 4 months, and let me tell you, there seems to be a HUGE learning curve when it comes to selling online! I'm sure I'll be learning something new every day for a loooong time!

The book that really helped me a lot is called How to Sell Your Crafts Online. http://www.amazon.com/Sell-Crafts-Onlin ... 0312541260 Each chapter is a lesson with key points at the end that you can implement right away to make your shop better.

The one part that I thought was a bit lacking was the chapter on SEO. It gives an overview of how to pick key words, but it wasn't until I joined the Team SEO & Relevancy for All Shops that I really saw a turn around in my key word hits via Etsy search. That Team will give you a FREE SEO critique on one of your listings - a process which takes days but it's well worth it!! Once you learn how to do that one listing, you'll know how to do the rest of your listings. This has truly been the one thing that has majorly made a difference in my traffic totals.

I haven't made a huge number of sales, certainly not as many as I'd like, but I think that's pretty common from what I've read on the Etsy forums. They say it's a combo between the time of year and the down economy. Also, I guess back in February google changed the way that they prioritize their search and that's hurt a lot of Etsy vendors. Google now searches not just key words, but it also checks to see if your listing is the same as other things already on the internet (like other ads you have elsewhere, or even if the end of your ad is repeated among all your listings). If it finds lots of repeat info it will give less priority to your listing. I know that's one thing I need to change, because all my listings end the same, and I'm sure that's why I almost never get traffic from Google. It's just a lot less efficient to come up with something new to say about each and every listing... grrrrr...

The shoptimizer app really helped! I had 30 more views today which is almost more than I've had all week. Thanks Aria, I'll have to check that out! Good luck with your shop :)

I have no idea about the Etsy side of things as I don't shop (or sell) there, but the couple of times I have found items on there, it's through Google. So make sure you're adding targeted keywords to your listings so that you also get found via search engines. :)

I have two shops - one for all my mixed media crafts and one for my soaps. My original shop has been open for 8 months I've got 150 sales and getting around 300-400 views a day.
My soap shop has been open for 2 months, has 1 sale and gets about.... 7 views a day.

Crazy right? I'm still trying to figure out how to work on my soap shop.

What I can tell you is this -
- Read the Etsy Business Forums - there's always a bunch of people asking questions and good feedback.
- work, work, work - it's a constant upkeep process, if you put items up and then walk away, it won't sell itself.
- Keep listing more items, the more things you have, the more chances for people to find you.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization) keywords are THE KEY - figure out what your items need because that's how people find you - it's a night and day different
- promote, share, relist, keep things fresh and get your name out there on any site you can
- Pictures - pretty is better!
- Profiles and descriptions - fill them out, put yourself in the buyers shoes as to what you'd like to see and what questions you might ask
- Did I mention keyword tags?? VERY important!

That's about all I can think of at 4am  but all of that and more is found on Etsy's forums.

Also, as far as your shop goes - I like your photos, but I think they're really dark. Maybe take photos outside or near a window with natural lighting or use an online photo editing program to brighten them up? Just my opinion - but think it would help make them more eye catching. :)

A heads up to those of you selling on Etsy and making any medical drug claims about your product.

Misskat -

If you’ve not read the Etsy Sellers Handbook, you should – it’s recently been redone with great information and tips.

http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/the-seller-handbook/

The Etsy Forums, although often helpful, tend to be filled with two categories of sellers - malcontents or folks looking for an answer to a specific question or problem. It's easy to get lost for hours reading forum posts. You should browse, but don't allow yourself to get bogged down in the muck or discouraged by the negativity.

Keep it in perspective. Along with my very first soaping friend (met on this board more than a year ago), we reminded ourselves and each other often, "This is a hobby." Neither one of us "needed" the income (although the extra cash is nice to have), we love what we are doing, especially the creative part and the social interaction with other Etsyans and customers. For us it is about having a good time and learning something new every day and sharing our discoveries.

If you're serious about a business that will generate lots of income quickly, Etsy is likely not the place for you, especially in the soap category. The competition is fierce with more than 800,000 sellers (all categories) now. I just looked at some quick numbers. Right now on Etsy, if you do a search for "soap" in the Bath and Beauty handmade category, you'll get 47,737 listed items. From what I can tell, only a handful of soap makers on Etsy earn enough income to be considered a "living" and many of them have lots of help in their shops (people who wrap, people who label, ship, even take their photographs). Most of them have their own web sites in addition to selling on Etsy or sell on other venues, do fairs, flea markets and crafts festivals. It takes years to build a reputation and a following. But, if you're looking for a place to start, it's perfect.

Etsy internal stats are better than nothing, but don't really tell you all that much. There are days I get 2,800 "views" and 2 sales and days that I'll get 100 views and 8 separate sales. No rhyme or reason that I’ve been able to figure out. Google Analytics are a little better, but it takes time to learn how to interpret those data.

And, most controversial perhaps, in light of what's already been said here, don't worry about SEO on Etsy for now. Etsy's listing "relevancy" (what gets you found internally on Etsy) uses a completely different algorithm than Google (where SEO rules). Etsy changed the way search worked last August - some good overall information here:

http://www.etsy.com/blog/news/2011/keep ... relevancy/

SEO is exceptionally important if you're running your own site and driving your own traffic. The advantage of a place like Etsy is that your traffic can and will come from people who go there to browse and hopefully to buy. Being found in Google is an advantage, but is not everything. The “small-time” soapers I know on Etsy (between 50 and 500 sales a year) are almost all exclusively on Etsy, with a presence on Facebook (although that’s now changing with their paid model), Twitter, although most don't really know how to market themselves using Twitter (Anne-Marie is a master at this, by the way), Pinterest, and many have their own blogs.

You have plenty of time to learn about SEO for when you're big and famous, rule the soaping world and have your own web site that competes with Amazon! Don't allow yourself to be discouraged or overwhelmed. Take great photos (the single most important thing you can do), learn about how to do your item titles and tags to be relevant in Etsy searches, join a few teams that are interesting and/or educational and, most of all, have fun.
