I just received my first order from NG---yeah! However, in looking back over the items I purchased, I realized that one of the FOs I purchased (Apple Dumpling.....yum....I want to eat it!) has a maximum useage rate of 1% for soap. Yikes! Am I reading this correctly? Does that mean that in a 1 pound batch of soap I can only use .16 ounce of the FO?
Perhaps I'm figuring this incorrectly....and i really hope I am. I'd love to soap this FO, but obviously that little of an amount won't really do much. Help! :?

P.S. The other FOs have a maximum useage rate of 5%. So in 1 pound I can use .8 ounce, correct? Is the 5% based on the total oils used, or the total amount of all ingredients (including lye and water)?

You calculated it right :( I believe that it the ONE I've seen their tester, Kim, use way less than the 1 ounce she usually uses.

It is 4.5g, so I'd round up to 5g. If you can't measure the 0.16oz easily. That is PPO.

I think we disregard the site  I personally really like soap, so I overdo it on purpose. Plus leaving 0.2oz in the bottle , yeah, just couldn't do it. Would feel like wasting it to me. When would I ever use 0.2oz?

See? I can justify my rule breaking! I just do it knowing that any skin reaction is my own idiotic fault!

Thanks, Hestey :). I guess for my own purposes, I might stick with the 1 oz. PPO, but would have to lower it if I was selling the soap.
Think I'll email NG and ask them their thoughts, since others have mentioned that their youtube videos have the tester lady using FO at 1 oz. PPO (if I'm remembering the posts accurately). I'm really liking most of the scents I bought from them and I really want the smell to come through nice and strong (as do most of my friends who come over to my house to sniff my soap :D ).

I usually do .50 to .75 ounces ppo, sometimes 1.00 if I think the scent might fade. Like Heather said, I also try to use up what I have.

It depends the FO really. I use their one ounce bottles in 2lb batches often and most usually come through fairly strong still. I've had a few that didn't, can't always tell beforehand. I've used some that customer reviews called very strong at a low usage rate that all but completely faded out for me. It's all in testing really.

If I have just a little FO left over ,I put into a similar scented FOs bottle so I can toss the empty one. That way I don't look at my stash and think I've got enough of it to soap with.

Almost all my fo's are NG's and I don't know if it's because I RTCP or just the specific fo's that I'm using, but I never have to go over 0.8 oz/lb.

As for the apple dumpling, that one has low useage rates for skin products because of the cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and cardamom in it, which are all potential skin irritants. That one, the IFRA useage level is 1%, so I would definitely not go above that.

I love Hestey and all you ladies so I don't want to offend anyone, but I only use fo's at or below their recommended useage level. If they're not strong enough at that level, then I find a different fo or supplier for that fo.
