Good morning everyone! :D

I'm very new to making soap- but I love it! My cousin needed help making soap to sell at the Farmer's Market, so I volunteered, and thus began my addiction! :lol:

So, I absorbed as much from her as I could, and then I purchased Smart Soap Making, and then I began creating my own soap. So between my cousin, and the book I did not know that you are supposed to cover & insulate your soap. My first several batches were poured, and left on a counter for 24 hours before I cut them. Since then I've started covering the soap, but not wrapping it. My question is: what is the purpose of insulating it? I have not noticed a marked difference in the soap that I covered and the soap I left 'flappin' in the breeze'.

Insulating the soap helps keep it warm to ensure it enters a gel phase. Gel phase typically makes a harder soap, and can make unmolding a bit easier from certain molds, and can also darken or embolden the colors you may have used. Insulating and/or covering your soap with plastic wrap also helps to prevent soda ash without spraying with alcohol.

Not necessary, but a lot of soapmakers prefer to gel their soaps.

Well, I put plastic wrap on top of my soaps and I still get soda ash. Any help here?

If you decorate the top of your soap, try spraying the rubbing alcohol on first and letting it sit for a few minutes before laying the plastic wrap on the soap skin. I can't remember the number of tops I've smudged with plastic wrap! :evil:
