Does anyone think making hair gel is doable?

It's really simple. Honestly.
You need between 0.1% and 0.3% Carbopol Ultrez-20 (about $30/kg at distributor price) depending on mild, medium, or concrete style viscosity; mica is great as a colorant. You also need some triethanolamine to neutralize the polymer. That's how it's made. Simples!

For 1Kg of medium-fix hair gel:

2g Carbopol Ultrez-20 (Lubrizol)
TEA, Q/S to neutralize the gel to pH=6
995 g purified water
5g sodium benzoate (preservative)
mica colorant

Method: add 5 g sodium benzoate, stir until dissolved
sprinkle the Ultrez-20 into the solution and allow to wet. (5 min)
raise temperature to 70C
add TEA until pH = 6.0
stir in mica colorant
allow to cool. Pour into sterilised containers when the temperature of the gel is approx 35C.

In fact, thanks for the idea. I am putting together ideas for entrepreneur product labs for local schools. Hair gel would be an ideal topic because it sells everywhere, a lot of teens use it, it will be easy to make in one lab session and the economics and materials are simple.

Wow! Didn't expect all of those ingredients! Sometimes it seems intimidating when one sees a whole bunch of ingredients that might not be easy to pronounce and/or don't know what its used for, or the purpose of the ingredients! Thank you!
