Hi Im from the Caribbean and to buy lye is kind of expensive so im thinking to make my lye from wood ashes. i was told that it have to be from hard wood and the white ashes have to be use. I also read that palm leaves can be use to make lye, and just wondering if coconut is under the same category.
I would like to know if i can make lye crystals from the the lye solution from the wood ashes.
i would be very grateful for you help, thank you.

That kind of lye only makes soft soap. To make bar soap youd have to evaporate all the water from your wood ash lye( pot ash) than burn off all the impuritied in a kiln (pearl ash).

There is no easy way to know the actual strength of lye that you get from wood ashes. it varies too much from batch to batch to be of much use for any products to sell.
