Teach Soap

In Vermont we have two things, Cows, and Maple Trees. Obvious two there would be milk and maple syrup. I have been thinking about using maple syrup in the place of honey. As for other local ingredients I've been harvesting a lot of herbs lately. Heal All, Mugwort, Yarrow, Boneset, and St. Johns Wort. I've also dug up a few Orris roots (actually a rhizome). If I had to formulate something out of all of that it would probably use Milk, Syrup, Ghee, Yarrow, and I'm not sure on a fragrance. Something pine perhaps. There are a lot of grass fed cows in the area so I could probably aquire some very green tallow to use as well if I was going 100% local and organic.

Beef tallow, lard, bear tallow, and deer tallow. Deer don't have much fat, but the fat that forms near the kidneys is great for adding to soap. If distribution channels were gone, I don't think I could get enough "locally" produced Vegetable oils for soap. In that senario we would also all be competing against the bio-diesel crowd for our supplies too.

Well Dave, you'd have a nice hard bar of soap!

I think here would probably be soybean, corn, lard and other varying animal fats and oils, peach kernel, cottonseed (I have no idea how that actually performs in soap!), local brews, pine tar? Where I live the only industry is timber really....

I did buy some red bean flour and rice flour to make some red beans and rice soap but haven't done it yet.....

I really have no idea...... I AM BAD AT THIS THREAD!!
