You can pre-mix lye if you keep it totaly sealed up in something sturdy and thick like a lab rated plastic and marked with a large warning on all sides. You have to be sure you don't have anyone around who could accidently get into it - VERY IMPORTANT! It can also mess up your homeowner's Insurance if the Fire Dept. finds out! ( Storing caustic chemicals can get you in trouble.)
Also, if any air gets to it, or it evaporates any, you will have some bad soap batches. If you don't make a lot of soap every day, I don't recommend making it ahead.

I don't have any kids around. I don't premix my lye water either. Too many things can go wrong. As has been suggested, crushed ice or even small ice cubes work well to bring the temp of the lye water down fast.

Premixing isn't a good idea and I have to agree with everyone here. Too many bad things can happen especially if you have kids or pets.

I keep distilled water in the fridge and fill up an ice cube tray also. I use several cubes....then the rest liquid when mixing lye so you're not waiting forever for the mix to come to desired temp. This works great for making goat's milk soap also. Ice cube trays are the ticket for any liquid you plan to mix with lye.
