Ok. So I have a recipe for lotions that I love. I would like to make it a tad thicker for more of a cream consistency. Would I reduce the amount of water and add more solids? I also love the addition of tapioca starch to reduce the "greasy feel" when using cocoa butter. That is currently the only butter I have. I also have fractionated coconut oil and jojoba oil. I have stearic acid, citric acid, bees wax, and emulsifying wax. Phenonip is the preservative on hand. I only want to make a small batch (like 4 oz) since I am running out of my ingredients and don't have the funds to re-up on them at the moment. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Lotioncrafter has a nice formulary. I would try there. Don't forget to convert any ozs. to grams for such a small batch. I hope you have a very accurate scale for the small amount of preservative that you will need.

Oh wow, thanks Irena! I missed that they have a formulary!

The problem is, I don't have the ingredients listed on most of their recipes. What is the lowest amount of water you would use for a cream? I am looking for something along the lines of a cold cream but using the stuff I have. I can do a larger than 4 oz batch but I do have a good accurate scale. My lotion recipe uses 70% water. If I bump it down to say 60% is that too low? I would think it could be ok since there are products you can make without water. Maybe I can just play a little bit today. Thanks.

60% would make a cream that's too thick. I wouldn't go below 70% and even then it will be heavy.

Here is a tutorial by Kim, she is one of NG's testers. She uses 60% water for a cream.

If you have Polawax or E-wax in your recipe, you don't need cetyl alcohol or stearic acid. It really depends on the rest of your formula.

I've read both ways oil into water and water into oil. It doesn't SEEM to matter. But I am still learning too, so I dunno for sure! :?
