You ever notice how when your making pasta sauce from scratch at the end of the process your blobs of olive oil have taken on a lovely red color from the tomato? What would happen if I infused dried tomato powder in olive oil to create a red orange dye? Has anyone done this before? The red color comes from carotenoids such as Lycopene which is all the rage right now for it's health benefits. I know it wouldn't really do much in the soap but it's still label appeal right? I would really like to do this one with say, a tomato leaf FO.

I've infused olive oil with paprika for an orange color in my cinnamon clove soap, so I don't see why tomato powder wouldn't work in a tea bag or something like that. I know I've seen several soap suppliers selling tomato powder as a colorant. And I've also seen soaps made with tomato juice as the liquid instead of water.

I did a tomato juice soap. It started out as a nice cream of tomato soup color, but after 6 months has faded to a creamy yellow.

I don't see why not. Even if it doesn't keep the red/pink color it might be a fun experiment. :)

I've used tomato powder before, so I don't see why not.

I SWEAR I saw dried tomato as a natural colorant on a soaping website....can't remember which one. I've been on so many. I could be mistaken.

Pretty soap, SeaShoreCrafts!

We have an overflow of tomatoes from our garden (we do backyard to market farming), and after the market we give away whatever is leftover or bring it home and I usually turn it into juice / smoothies, etc. Have been considering making a swirly tomato soap with some of the juice but wondered how the color would hold up. My first thought was it might turn a bit brown, so I'm waiting for some colorants to come in so I can add a bit of it to get some pop.

Thanks for all the feedback here! I was considering purchasing pure lycopene to use as a colorant since it's what makes tomatoes red and it's attributed with most of the health benefits from eating the fruit, but if it fades my guess is it won't really hold up well after all. That still is a lovely color of soap. The carrot juice soap I made (I split it and colored some with annatto as well and left the rest plain carrot) was about the same color and I'm still waiting on it to cure. People always talk about how calendula holds up its yellow color in CP, I'm starting to get the idea not all carotenoids hold up equally in soap.
