I don't believe so...I've been doing Hot Process in the crockpot and rarely are the temps within 10 Deg.

I really thinks it's to insure Cold Process Soapers have enough time to work with their soap before it
gets too thick to work with.

If your mixture gets above 110 Deg...it will thicken faster.

Kettler, I room temp cold process my soap (just mixed hot lye poured into room temp, unmelted oils) and never had a problem with accelerated gel unless it's due to the FO I'm using or if I'm using milk or honey. Most of the time it takes close to an hour before gel starts with my recipe. I usually have plenty of time to do swirls, too.

Other than when I first started making CP, I never check the temps. If the pot and the lye container felt the same to my gloved hand, I mixed. The only times I had a batch overheat was from using milk in the recipe and not watching it closely enough, and when I had an FO with spice in it. I think many soapers get way too stressed out over temps.

I wonder if it has to do with the recipe...and yes...the Fragrance Oils used?

My very first CP batch I did blew my PVC Mold apart, (Slowly of course), and made a mess everywhere....Volcano'd.
Both my oils and Lye solution were below 110 Deg.
Was an interesting learning experience

I use beeswax in almost every batch so room temp oils are out for me.

I don't think having the oils and lye 10 degrees apart is to slow or prevent saponification. Maybe to prevent the soap from doing the volcano thing. I did do a previous temp study and in 1 hour the temp jumped to 121 then 1.25 hours my soap reached 141. I did reach full gel with this soap as that was my goal... at that time I was getting alot of partial gel. I know Irena said she had a soap reach 170 with out overheating. Genny, I bet you are right about it being a carry over from that chart. Many ideas are thought to be true (like adding oils after trace to superfat) where eventually we find out this is not correct. I think the FO\EO has alot to do with acceleration along with the recipe. I am finding out that my all veggie recipes are tracing quicker than my lard recipes. So I will do another soap in about 2 weeks (we are soon to vacate our house for EAA) and will mix the hot lye in melted oils but not the same temp and then I will ck the temps every 15 min and post the results. In the meantime if someone has a soap overheats could they check the temp of it for me???

I have found a lot of contrary opinions on this CP mixing temp thing. My own feelings about it, are that I want the solid fats to be properly melted but not overheated, ideally I want them at say 30C above the melting point, so because the qty of lye is way different from the quantity of oils, it is bloody difficult to calculate the equalisation temperature if mixing at two different temperatures, then I'll want the lye to be within say 10C of the mixed oils. Really I just estimate with my hands 8)
