Teach Soap

I was studying the data for the FO's I bought from Nature's Garden. Under "Color Suggestions" - some have cryptic suggestions such as my favorite: "Use no soap dye in the amount you desire" and "No soap dye". Clearly, some FO's bring a certain color to the mix and I see that in some of the FO descriptions that say things like "use green with this one".

But I'm still confused and have not heard back from them regarding clarification. Does this mean there are no suggestions for dye, in that any color can be used? Or that some terrible reaction occurs when you mix dyes with that FO? Even the most miserable color wrought by an FO, I would think, could be fixed by making it a rich brown, or shades of gray.

Sorry to bring this to the board...NG would be the one's to talk to but have not heard back.

It's most likely that the fragrance has a deep yellow color, which is harder to work with. Just as long as the color is soap safe, go ahead and use it, but be aware that soap with a yellow fragrance oil will not make a blue soap if you add blue dye. It will make green.

There aren't really any fo's that you can't use dyes with. You can use what ever colors that you want. NGC just gives color suggestions that would coordinate well with the scent. Like yellow for banana, geen for bamboo, etc.

Great...thanks! I have some experience with dyes and "color theory in action" from working with fiber (and my decades old art school education doesn't hurt either), so am pretty confident I can deal with whatever color the FO produces with an appropriate dye color. I was afraid there was some obscure chemical reaction they were alluding to but not fully explaining.

I swear, I have never spent so much up front prep time prior to engaging in a new endeavor, but its clearly time well spent. It appears that FO's are like a chemical "wild card" in the process due to their complexity, no? The properties of the oils and lye seem to be well understood, but then all these new chemically complex FO's are developed, which may introduce a whole new set of issues.
