Teach Soap

I wanted to try a recipe using CRISCO SHORTENING. However, I don't know how to add this to the lye calculator. CRISCO lists their ingredients (in this order); SOYBEAN OIL, FULLY HYDROGENATED PALM OIL, PARTIALLY HYDROGENTATED PALM & SOYBEAN OILS, MONO & DIGLYCERIDES, TBHQ & CITRIC ACID (ANTIOXIDANTS).

I've heard of people using shortening in recipes, and want to give it a try. Does anyone know how I would add this to BB lye calculator? Or is there another lye calculator out there that has this listed?

Won't the citric acid make a difference? For every one molecule of citric acid (which donates three protons to acid base reactions) you will be negating the effect of three molecules of sodium hydroxide. The acid is placed there to stop oxidation but it should also at least impede saponification depending on how much is in there.

I'd guess the citric acid won't be present at more than about 0.2% so there shouldn't be that much effect. C6H8O7 molecular weight = 192, NaOH = 40, so it takes 192g of citric acid to neutralise 40g of NaOH (law of moles)
So, say per kilo of Crisco, there's 0.2% citric, that is 2g, that will neutralise roughly 2/5 or 0.4g of NaOH.
Nothing much to worry about, I'd say.
The Crisco sap value will probably be about 195.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Just an FYI, TBHQ is a softening agent. I have noticed my soap is slightly softer when I use crisco.

I use about 15% shortening in my soap. It works very well. I called the manufacturer and they gave me the SAP value for it, but even so, SAP values have a typical +/- 5 range (they quoted 190-200 with the average at 195)
