I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I only fear preservatives because I've had allergic reactions to them. I put a TINY bit of straight liquid germal plus on my inner elbow to test it though... no reaction! Hopefully it will be the same with the phenonip.

Food preservatives are the same thing, I have to avoid them, and red lake dye, like the plague! Same with meat that has had antibiotics, I sometimes get a reaction. It's getting easier though! Seems companies are seeing the movement toward "chemical free" and are being very accommodating.

To inject a positive note -

I had a very nice conversation at a craft show this weekend with a couple of ladies about the difference between antioxidants and actual preservatives.

They were fellow vendors (although not makers of soap or any other toiletries). One of them had come by my booth, we were chatting about soap, she said, "everybody's adding Vitamin E to their soap and I'm allergic to Vitamin E", and then someone she knew came up to her and they went back to her booth.

Later I went over to their booth, and pointed out that I didn't put Vitamin E in my soap as a rule. When she said, well, I understand they do it as a preservative, I said, no, not really. They may think it's a preservative, but it's just an antioxidant, something to slow/prevent rancidity. And there's a whole world of difference between an antioxidant and a preservative.

Both were very interested, and I promised to bring them some other soap I have the next time we are doing a show together.

It was nice to encounter folks who may have initially been uninformed about the uses of antioxidants versus preservatives, but they were open to learning the differences.

Yeah, that's great! I find a lot of folks "know" what they are talking about and refuse to be told otherwise. Unfortunately it could be the buyer of their products that pays the price.

One of the ladies I subscribe to on youtube said in one of her latest videos that she only needs to cure her soaps for 2 weeks because she does CPOP. I mentioned that she should still cure them for 4-6 weeks and she told me that I don't know what I'm talking about and she has been making soap for years. I've been doing MP for around 20 years, and you know what? I learn new stuff all the time!

I guess I don't get it when people are unwilling to even look into learning something, correcting a mistake.

So does anyone really have any data on vitamin E slowing down the rancidity of free oils in soap?

Going back to the original rant, I have to say I agree. So many people are soaping without gloves or goggles it's scary. It's scarier still when inexperience soapers are learning these bad habits from the videos! That said, it's great the things you can learn on YouTube. I'm thinking of using an alarm so I don't end up getting lost in video after video!
