Can a flavoring made with propylene glycol be used in lip balm? I'm wanting to know if it is compatible with an anhydrous product like lip balm.

I've used the ones with PG that you get in the baking section for flavoring frostings and chocolates etc. Only for personal use though!

Well, poop.

I got a "we don't know, but you're welcome to buy some and experiment" answer from the company. However, I came across a flavoring of lip balm discussion on another B & B forum, and the answer seems to be that propylene glycol is NOT oil soluable.

That's a real shame, as this company carries a snickerdoodle flavoring, that is, alas, PG-based.

Rats!

On a brighter note, someone recently requested a lime lip balm from me. I'd never made lime, but have the EO, so dived right in. I was very pleasantly surprised.

I've been using propylene glycol based flavorings in lip balms for a long time (18 years ish, forget when I made my first lip balms). Never had an issue with it separating or anything. It is designed for use in butter/shortening based frostings and waxy chocolates.

Isn't propylene glycol a solvent for oils? So wouldn't that make it oil soluble? I worked in the cake section of the baker for almost 8 years and every flavoring we had contained propylene glycol. They were all used, like Hestey said, in the butter based frostings.

Is lime safe for lips? I thought most citrus EO's could cause sun burn it applied topically (phototoxicity)?

It also matters how the eo's are extracted. Steam distilled lime is supposed to be non-phototoxic or so I've heard.

I use bergaptene free citrus oils for lip balms.

I used BB's margarita flavoring with just a couple drops of a lime EO mixed in and it was very yummy lime flavor.
