Teach Soap

Can someone give me so sort of starting point to making a lotion recipe...is there a guideline on percentages to use? 80% water, 20% oils and do you have to include FO/EO and preservative into these some how? Does the water/oils have to be the same temp or warm before mixing? How long will my lotion last, I plan on using Optiphen Plus because I have read its ok to use in most any formulation...sugar scrubs ect!

I prefer liquid germall + for lotions. Soapbuddy has a sticky on preservatives somewhere on this forum as does Swift in a sidebar on the blog I mentioned above.

Thanks everyone, I have read the link before on preservatives and it was helpful. I think I am going to stick with my original plan of optiphen plus...seems to have what qualities I am looking for. My lotion will be quite basic for starters...water, shea butter and maybe cocoa butter, jojoba oil or grapeseed oil or both(haven't decided), stearic acid and preservative. Oh and some scent

Don't forget to heat and hold your distilled water. Heat a little more then you will need since some of the water will evaporate.

You're lacking an emulsifier, it will separate. Get some glycerol monostearate, it gives a really nice feel and whiteness. Inexpensive. Use about 50% of the total lipids, that will work fine. (Stearic acid is not an emulsifier)
I advise melting the solid lipids such as stearic acid and shea, then add the liquid ones and mix well. Measure the temperature. 70 - 90C would be fine. Take the polar phase (water mainly) up to 70 - 75C and hold it there for say 10 minutes. Then add them both together and stick blend. The emulsion will form immediately but you'll have to wait for it to cool before it thickens.
Use about 1% FO. Don't use EO in creams because of allergy etc issues. That's my opinion, others may think differently.
