Teach Soap

I am thinking about trying some oil infusions for my soaps and wonder if anyone has any do's and don't's for this.

I was looking at trying calendual and juniper berries, would like a few that a good for anyone to use..especially sensitive skin! Open to opinions on what herbs might be better too! Going to try both hot and cold way of infusing.

Chamomile and lavender come to mind as does comfrey. Have fun experimenting!

you could do the cold infusing but it will take forever to do- like several weeks -into months. getting the oil hot but not too hot is the key to extracting the beneficial material from the herbs. One would be better off infusing one ounce herbs per pound of oils in a double boiler for 2 hours. The possibilities are endless. Chamomile is a good one, mint, lavender, soapwort, calendula, lavender, alkanet root, dandelion leaf, comfrey, borage, parsley... the list goes on.

Thanks for all the ideas, lunasear. Funny but I never thought of mint! Now I have still more ideas to add to my soaping to-do list.

your oils wont contain the smell of the herbs, but infusing is a good way to extract the benefits of the herbs to include in your soap.

I did juniper once and I got, you guessed it, brown soap. The scent also didn't come through.

I have had very good luck with comfrey, calendula, nettle, and chamomile.

I have sensitive skin and I can use Peppermint. Just use it in safe amounts.

Do all of you infuse fresh herbs,or dried?

That's great,because in that case season doesn't matter.
But isn't it 1 oz ppo too much? I mean,dried herbs are pretty light,the whole bunch will be needed.
