Teach Soap

Has anyone ever used sugar in their cold process soaps? I've used salt, but I'm considering sugar in one of my recipes, but I have no idea how it would react. If sugar is ok to use, any particular size grains work best? Thanks for all the incredible advice!

You can use sugar in a small amount prediluted in some water so it dissolves. Don't use too much so the soap won't overheat.

Does it provide any benefit? So, it doesn't stay solid in the soap?

Oh, ok. I thought that maybe it would act like sea salt and I could use it as an exfoliant.

Sometimes I dissolve regular granulated sugar in my water before adding the lye to it. It seems to have helped with bubbles but I'll have to try making the exact same recipe with and without the sugar sometime and see if I can tell a difference! Isn't adding salt to harden the bars only temporary, so more to help with unmolding?

Adding salt can make your soap harder. It's not temporary.

But when I use the sea salt, it doesn't completely dissolve so it acts as an exfoliant.

I add the salt just before I pour it in the mold, usually at the same time as my essential oil.

I'm a little disappointed about the sugar, but glad I asked before I tried it. I could have really made a mess of things! Between this site and BB, I could spend days! Thanks again for all the tips, tricks, and advice!
