Teach Soap

Ok, so I want to test a few recipes for lotion and am wondering how long they will last without the preservative. I will buy and add that part when I am ready to market it. I was planning on trying a few simple batches for just myself to try first...never made lotion before(other than whipped shea)

Any rough guidelines to follow with basic lotions?

I just made my first lotions tonight (woohoo!) and am hooked . I thought about doing the same thing as you.....foregoing the preservative for now, since I wasn't selling it. But then I was concerned that if I settled on a recipe I loved, the preservative might alter the final product and I'd have to re-do the entire process of finding what worked best for me. So I thought I'd start from the beginning with the preservative and fiddle with recipes that included preservatives in hopes of finding the one I want. Not sure if I'm expressing my reasoning well or not, but I guess I just didn't want to get used to the lotion without the preservative and then be surprised by it when I added the preservative in.

Lotion without a preservative will start going bad within 24 hours. It can grow mold, germs or bacteria that the naked eye can't always see. I would throw that batch away after 24 hours. Please don't take the chance and include a preservative in EVERY batch you make!

Thanks everyone, I had no idea it would spoil that fast...preservative it is

I have been looking at Optiphen Plus, want something that will be multi purpose if I need it and easy to use...any thoughts?

What kind of misbehave are you talking about? Can you suggest a good multi use preservative thats paraben free?

Hmm, I use optiphen and have not had any curdle issues. I think it works okay. It does have a slight smell though so take that into account when adding fragrance. In the lotion it wasn't too strong but in our sugar scrub it was more noticeable for some reason.
