I have a batch of basic recipe goatmilk soap that I added vanilla to so it turned a nice chocolate color but I just noticed that several bars have an orange center. I could rename the batch " Reeses Pieces"
It has cured for 3 weeks..
I'm sure this is Lye but do I need to throw this away or is it safe to use in 3--4 more weeks.
Thanks

Did you check to see if it was lye heavy? If it's 3 weeks old and is lye heavy, a longer cure isn't going to help it. To me it doesn't sound like it had anything to do with the lye, it was more likely the goat milk or the fo, or a combination of both.

were the bars orange colored to start with? It would be helpful if you could post a picture. :D

It looks to me like the bar is curing. Lye heavy is when there is still lye remaining after the saponification process. You can check to see if it's lye heavy by wetting your finger and then rubbing it on the soap. Then touch your finger to you tongue. If it's lye heavy, you'll feel a "zap" (like licking a 9 volt battery or having your tongue snapped by an elastic band). If it's not lye heavy, it should just taste like soap. If you ran your recipe through a lye calculator and everything was measured correctly, you should be fine. I've had soap with vanilla in them that looked cheddar cheese with a thick rind for awhile, but they eventually turned dark brown all the way through. 8)

My goats milk soaps that turn orange are usually the ones that overheated.
