Teach Soap

So here's my latest batch of soap.


I tried to use beer as my liquid. I put the lye into the beer. The beer was in a container of ice. Everything seemed fine. I seperated some to give an accent color to the top. So far so good. It all went together smooth but I looked at it after washing up my supplies and this oil was on top.

My recipe:
cocoa butter 47 grams
castor oil 51 grams
coconut oil 207 grams
olive oil 255 grams
palm oil 119 grams

beer 258 grams
lye 97 grams

1 oz of Indian Sandlewood FO (BB)

Any ideas?? Is it a total loss. It smeels really good. When I touch the oils it doesn't zap. It smells like the FO. I soaped at around 100 degrees. Was really working on trying to not overheat anything.
I hate wasteing oils!!! UGH

Give it a couple of days. It might absorb back in. Beer has natural sugars, so that makes the saponification go hotter.

Did you use enough Lye?

When I ran your recipe through the lye calculator...it said you should have used
180 grams of lye for a 5% excess fat.

Either that or I made a mistake in my calculations...might want to have someone
else verify the numbers.

Edited! - Ooops...Never mind.
I set it up for a 2.5 lb batch...you did a 1.5 lb batch.
I then got 107grams of lye for a 5% excess fat.

Keep in mind different lye calculators will (most likely) come up with different lye amounts since each oil has a range in its SAP value, and I don't think any of the calcs agree on just one number due to oil batch variations. I put her recipe into SoapCalc and got 97g of lye

I agree - just leave it and see how it goes. If its soaping oils, it may soak back in. I had some FO seep out of one batch that never did but that loaf still smells incredibly strong.

I checked the recipe out as well. The lye was correctly calculated. I would leave it for a couple of days.
In worst case you should rebatch it

After 36 hours it has seeped back into the soap some. Will let it go for awhile longer.
If not all the oil seeps in can I just wipe it off and use it?? I had one really bad batch and the second I touched it I knew it zapped. It was burning and stinging my hands. But with this one it just seems to be oils. Any reason why they didn't saponify with the rest of the oils??
