Hi Everyone! After lurking in the forum for months, it finally seemed time to join. Everyone has been so helpful and funny too! It's nice to have so many people to share my soaping addiction. I did want to say hello earlier but the soap gremlins interrupted...
The soap gremlins went on vacation for a couple of weeks so everything was going extremely well. Then they returned with renewed energy! While making a recipe I've been soaping for months, I noticed a very light arcing of lye into my plastic measuring cup, even though I'd used a dryer sheet on it. It's very dry here but it's never been that bad before. After cleaning up, I carefully pour my lye into my distilled water and same thing happens, only worse because my vent fan was on. Yikes! Lots of water and then some vinegar later, I resolved to keep going. That was when several ounces of coconut oil spilled in my microwave. Lovely! After still more cleaning and some grumbling, I discover that I'm 0.2 oz short of one of my soft oils. Darn! After a quick check with the lye calc, the missing 0.2 oz is added to another soft oil going into the soap anyway. Problem solved! It was so routine adding the lye solution to the oils, even coloring, scenting and swirling, that those soap gremlins had to finally be napping right? Noooo! After pouring into one of my trusty 10 lb log molds, I discovered it was leaking like a sieve! Still more cleaning and a cold beer later, the soap batter had thickened up enough to stop leaking. LOL maybe you should all try your new projects while the soap gremlins are busy with me!
Happy Soaping!
