Well, I heard back from the nice lady at the company regarding the Tritan copolyester container. Bad news :cry:

the expert regarding this material has told her that the lye could compromise the material over time :cry:

So....back in the market for a lye water pitcher. I should be looking for a rigid plastic, correct? What should the symbol on the bottom say? (Was it PP5?)

I have two of the Walmart brand Mainstays plastic pitchers - they're PP5 and have held up fine for my 3lb and under batches. I do have a 4q stainless steel bucket that I bought on Amazon so when I start making larger batches or making it a lot more often than every couple of weeks, I'll switch to using the bucket.

Hi
The safest plastic for lye solution is polypropylene. As you know the lye solution gets really hot and as polypropylene plastic is heat resistant it is safe to use. As I am not in the US, I don't know where you could get one. An alternative of course is good of pyrex glass.

Yeah, pyrex glass is not such a good idea! The thought of lye covered exploding glass was enough to make me invest in a stainless steel pitcher!

Most people would be put off by the thought of an exploding pyrex glass pitcher. :!:

So, I guess that leaves polypropylene. I think polypropylene is either PP or PP5. It is the recommended container of choice by Kevin Dunn in Scientific Soapmaking.
Walmart might be your best bet.

You can usually pick up SS pitchers from restaurant supply stores (like Ares in Canada) for $4 or $5. Try googling and see if you have one locally. Or you could go into restaurants and see if they have any old dented ones that they would like to sell. You could also look for a prep counter drop in like Take a look around that site BTW, they have nice stuff for a really good price. You could also email them and see if they have any dented items that they would sell at a good discount. Just be sure to tell them it is for lye so it can only be dented, not split.
