can someone please tell me the differences there are... I read about them nad the only difference I saw was how they were processed. I found a recipe for salt scrubs.. but it calls for european spa salts-medium grain. cant I just use epson salts? cause that's what I have . I also can ground them up to any texure... please help...

Here are links to 2 articles on the salts commonly used in toiletries: and The first article lists a few of the salts, the different grain sizes and how each type is used in toiletries. The second lists a LOT of salts (this article is from an online salt company) and a description of each. Here is an additional link to a great salt scrub primer from The Natural Beauty Workshop blog

Epsom salt is actually magnesium sulfate and not a real salt (sodium chloride). Its' grain is consistent but coarse. It's most commonly used for foot soaks or mixed into bath salts. I don't know if I would use your epsom salt in a scrub - it might be too coarse for exfoliation purposes. Depending on personal preference, most salt scrubs use fine to medium grain salts or a mixture of both. I guess if you want to, you could make a very small batch using the Epsom salt to test it out. :)

I use a combination of epsom salt and sea salt in my 'bath salts'. For scrubs I tend to choose sugar... because if you have a cut or excoriated area the salt will burn.

The type of salt you use should depend to some extent on the water in your area. If you have hard water then Epsom salt might work better because it tends to soften the water.

Nah, we're all cool here, Hazel. 8) I should have been more clear in my statement about the difference between Epsom salts and other salts. I don't have anything against Epsom salt. In fact I love it(!) mixed in bath salts or as is for a muscle soak especially for my old wrist injury. My only concern with it in a scrub is that it is a medium grain salt, and for someone like Melissa or her gift recipients who have probably never used a salt scrub before, it might be too abrasive not knowing how much pressure to exert. You know your scrub because of your research so you knew to wet it a little bit before scrubbing and to use a little less pressure scrubbing, whereas most people would just scoop it up straight from the jar and start rubbing. I know I did this the first time I tried a salt scrub. (I know, dumb!) That's why I was suggesting that Melissa try it first to see if she likes it in her recipe, otherwise she can always make bath salts or bath bombs (great idea!) which are oh so relaxing and spa-like!

Yes, I love sugar scrubs! And no more sting!

Barquentine has a great point about water hardness. We have hard water here where I live and adding epsom salt to my bath salt mix for me makes the water seem "softer" and to hold the fragrance better too, just like dendritic salt does.

I use one of those hand held gringing tools my dad gave me.. after I washed it and such. I only use it for grinding up salt. I have a seprate one for grinding up oatmeal too. both are steilized and safe cause I dont use them for anything else. I was thinking of espom salts and mix them with other salts for spa stuff later on.. right now its all about soap and lotions and sugar scrubs. next month it'll be something like the salt scrubs and clay masks I think. thank you. Melissa
